High Ping and connection problems on the DIR 655
« on: February 25, 2012, 11:10:44 PM »

Hello all, I'm here today because I've been having an issue with my router for the past week now. When I ping google.com I get numbers that range from 800-1000ms for a very long time and then randomly go back to normal (26ms average) for 10 minutes before high ping starts once more. This issue has me stumped and I've been looking online for a solution and I'm starting to give up. I called my ISP and they pretty much informed me that it was the router that was giving the issue seeing how a wired connection to my Laptop gives me normal ping and speed. I called Dlinks and the guy troubleshooted with me by updating the firmware to the latest. It worked! but for a good hour (More or less). I turned off everything and went to sleep. When I woke up the next day, the high ping was back and worse than before. Now I'm receiving 2000ms and I'm starting to believe my router is going to explode. Accessing video sites is a b**ch. 5 minute videos buffer for about an hour. I've tried disabling WLAN auto configure, resetting my router completely, resetting my modem, looked on various forums, downloaded various programs. What now? I really want to avoid trashing the router because it belongs to my brother and he has some sort of attachment to it -__-. I'm using a Westell 6100 modem and there are 3 laptops including my own that is connected to this wireless. Please someone help I don't know what to do!!

What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.

Some things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall if you have this option.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.
Turn off Short GI, WLAN Partiton and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. I recommend CAT6 and the shorter the better if possible. I use a 1 footer. Swap cable between modem and router. Sometimes these in box cables are not make well.

Ensure the phone lines if on DSL or the cable line is in good condition going to the modem. If on cable, make sure the cable line going to the modem doesn't have any T.V. line splitters on it, or if needed, only have ONE good quality one if needed. Splitters will lower the signal going to the modem. If on DSL, make sure the phone lines are correctly connected and properly filtered.

Hello FurryNutz thank you for replying. To answer your questions, I believe my modem is built in router and I'm not so sure how to put it in bridge mode. But, I followed all your advice to the letter and it seemed to work in stabilizing and reducing my ping to 200ms average but it still pretty high from the 26ms I'm suppose to get. Also I'm getting 1.4 mbps on a 3mbps subscription. I'm not so sure what you mean by wireless modes G and N. How do I configure that? I'm also using WPA2-Personal. No cordless phones except the one in my parents room which is far from the router. There are quite a few wifi routers in the area. Could that be causing the problem?

I would contact your ISP service and ask them to help you bridge the modem. If the modem can't be bridged then I would use the DMZ feature of the modem and input the IP address that the router gets from the Modem on put that in the modems DMZ.

I would also try a different or upgraded modem too.
To change wireless modes, go into Setup/Wireless/Manual and there will be the options there to change modes.

IF you you do have alot of other wifi near by, this can certainly be a cause of wifi problems for the router as it's having to maintain a good signal and keep a good channel going while having to deal with other wifi near by. Are they all mostly on 2.4Ghz? If so, then I might think about getting into 5Ghz routers should this continue to be an issue for you.

They are all on 2.4 ghz. And I wanted to know if it was possible to fix the router or tweak it in a way. Mind you, this router used to be running quite smoothly even with all those routers. Then out of nowhere it started having major problems. Also the DMZ feature does not work it gives me no internet access. I just can't understand why it works for a good 15 minutes then goes right back to crap.

Lol you sound like a bot. You said that already. And I tried all that already. There is no such configuration of G and N modes on my router settings. Wireless devices are about 2 ipods and 3 laptops.

Sure about that? Mine has single G and Mixed G and N.
What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
