Problems using DNS-320
« on: February 22, 2012, 04:49:32 AM »

Hi guys, I'm new here!

Recently purchased a Sharecenter DNS-320.

I use one of these at work, and it worked out of the box. Worked perfectly well. very happy with it, so I decided to buy one for home too.

Installed (on one machine) with the CD, The 320 was recognised, I installed it, everything was fine. Accessed it, added a couple of files to it, and managed to easily map network drives in windows 7.

The problems come when I try to ACCESS anything I have saved on it, as soon as I click on file to open it, or drag it to my desktop to copy from the NAS, it just hangs there for ages, then gives me an error message.

I have installed this onto two different machines, both running Windows 7 64Bit Home Premium, both up to date with updates, and both get the exact same problems.
I tried using the torrent downloaded through a web browser and it worked perfectly, but once my torrents were downloaded, once again, I could not access the files.

I am on 02 Broadband, and have their standard router (I'm in the UK by the way), port 80 was opened on the router for the NAS, and Upnp is turned off on the router (so I can play Battlefield 3), other than that, NO settings on the router have changed from the standard out of the box settings.

Would very much appreciate any help I can get on why this might be happening, like I say I have one at work, and that works perfectly fine on the same kinds of machines. Never had ANY problems with it.
But my home one I can't get to work.

Thanks in advance

Chris

How are you trying to copy the files from the dlink? are you using \\dlink share or web browser etc? bit more info on what you are doing would help.

No, Not using the web browser,

Mapped a network drive to each computer (one for each physical drive)

I can access these and copy files to them, no problems there at all.

Then when I try to use the files (accessing via windows explorer) It hangs and gives an error message.

Hi Chris,
I am afraid I don't know how to fix this, but I suggest you look into the w7 file permissions.  I have no problems accessing, moving, or deleting files form several W7 or xp machines.  The settings I can see from a w7 machine are below.  Yours I suspect will almost certainly be different and how to change them, I do not know.

At the Volume level, I have (properties, Security Tab)

Everyone
root(Unix User\root)
root(Unix Group\root)

All with "Special Permissions" checked

At the folder and subfolder level, I have

Everyone
allaccount(Unix Group\allaccount)
Linux User..(DLINK-4XYCCR\Jessie)

All with "Special Permissions" checked

At the file level, I have

Everyone
allaccount(Unix Group\allaccount)
Linux User..(DLINK-4XYCCR\Jessie)

But in the file level permissions all have every permission checked except "special".
"Jessie" is a user with read/write permission set in 320.

I'm getting more than a little annoyed by this now,

Called D-Link Technical support, who told me to reformat the drives, try taking the drives out and access the device without drives in, and also to do a full reset on the drive, after nothing worked they said it was faulty and sent out a replacement (very quick no nonsense service. very impressed)

While trying to set this drive up the software kept giving me errors when trying to format the drives, eventually I gave up, and used the web interface to set the device up. This worked first time (I was using my ddns account to access the drive through my browser.

However once the drive was installed I am STILL getting the same errors.

When using the configuration utility on the disk I can successfully map drives to my machines (which can then be accessed, and have files written to them no problems at all). However when I click the "configuration" button, which opens a browser and points it to the location on my network where the device presides (e.g. 192.168.1.XX) the browser fails to load a page, it cant access this location.

Are these problems related?

I have taken my laptop to work, and connected it to the DNS-320 we have at work (which already has 6 windows vista 64bit and Windows 7 64bit machines attached no problems), The laptop can easily map the DNS-320 that I have at work, and can read/write files there, with no special alterations to security software or anything, litterally just opened up my computer, "mapped network drive" and bosh. i was away. So I can safely assume that the problem is not with my computers at home.

I have now tried to set (two different) DNS-320's up on my network with the same error.
I've tried:
x1 Windows 7 64bit Home Premium Desktop (Mcafee security)
x1 Windows 7 64bit Laptop Home Premium (Mcafee security)
x1 windows vista Basic Laptop (Mcafee security)
x1 Windows vista home premium 32bit (Zone alarm Security)

I am starting to believe that this may be a problem with my router, I'm on 02 Broadband (I'm in the UK, I don't know if there are many UK users here, or if everyone is), so I have an "02 wireless box" I'm sorry, I don;t know the exact make and model.

The only settings that I have changed from default on this router are to open up port 80 to utilise the ddns service on the NAS which functions perfectly.

and I have also turned off Upnp (as It causes dropout errors while playing Battlefield 3), I have turned upnp back on to test  the drive and it had no (visible) effect on the drive at all. Other than that , this router is at full factory settings.

I also called 02 to see if they knew any features that might need to be turned on or off on the router and all I got was "we cant help with third party periferals, and dont advise changing any settings on the router" which was very unhelpful.

Can anyone suggest any settings that may need to be changed on the router for this device to work? might be something that is taken for granted that it's normally turned on? anything I could try would be great. I'm starting to pull out what very little was left of my hair in the first place.

Please help a balding man fix his NAS before he becomes prematurely a premature bald man (without a working NAS).

Thanks.

Chris,

The first thing you need to do is find out what the differences are between your home setup and work setup.  Include the DNS-320 settings, router or switch, WiFi setup and so on.

I'm not familiar with the O2 equipment - only saw it a my sisters when I setup her computer - bur we have something like it here in France from Orange which can be a PITA.

When I get called out to fix problems like yours I usually finish up by hanging the wireless router off an 8 port GB switch and cabling the NAS to the switch which also allows for 6 computers to also be cabled to the switch.  This has the bonus of removing the wireless router from the main network while still allowing web access as well as WiFi.

I'm not saying you have to do this, it might be something in the O2 router that is causing the problem, or it might be that the O2 router is a lousy piece of junk.

Right,

After finally getting through to someone who actually cared about helping me at o2, he informed me that in a couple of months time o2 are going to be updating their network, this will require a firmware update on all o2 boxes, people like me who have been a customer with them since the beginning and have the oldest version of the router (found out its an O2 Wireless Box 1 - Thompson 780WL) will find the firmware breaks the box, as its incompatible.

So, as the newer one will need to be sent out to me anyway, he used some forward thinking, and sent it to me now, as he suspected it was a firmware issue stopping the box communicate properly with the PC.

Guess what! it works! new box was set up within seconds, and the drives work perfectly with the new router, remapping of drives took literally 15 seconds, all machines now happily communicating with NAS and router.

Happy.
