Cannot get 645 to serve up internet
« on: March 05, 2012, 10:14:06 AM »

My setup:  Verizon FIOS with Actiontec router.   Actiontech at 192.168.1.1 serving DHCP over it's LAN ports to a Netgear wireless router.

Want to replace Netgear with 645.  Messed around for several hours last night and cannot get internet from the 645 - I keep getting a DNS error page.

I'm at work, so don't have all the details available until later, but here's what I know:

645 is being assigned 192.168.1.3 by the Actiontec router.  It's getting 192.168.1.1 as it's DNS server.  I have 645 set as 10.0.0.1.  I have my laptop plugged into LAN port 1 on the 645.   I tried DNS relay on and off.  I tried setting up a static IP on the 645 based on what it had been assigned.   I've compared the Netgear settings to the 645 and they all appear the same - I just cannot get the 645 to serve up internet.
This was an open box purchase, incidentally, and am wondering if it could be a defective unit?   I had the Netgear up and running in 10 minutes, no hassle.

Any initial thoughts for me to try?  Thanks in advance.

Does the Actiontec router have a DMZ? Try reserving the 192.168.1.3 first on the modem then input 192.168.1.3 into the DMZ on the modem.

 ;)

BTW, Teamviewer is kewl for remote management of PCs and networking. I would also enable remote management of the router if you need to.  ;D

Well, well, well....  I reset the 645 to factory settings, and did NOT run the internet setup wizard (which is the first thing that comes up at 192.168.0.1).  It instantly started working!    Just went through and manually setup wireless passwords and such....

I can access everything.    For whatever reason, if I ran the "setup wizard" after a factory reset, it would always report an unsuccessful attempt to connect to the internet, and it must have left some sort of setting that caused the router to not work.

It's probably caused by the Actiontec FIOS modem router combo  :-\

So in this case, manually setting up is probably preferred.
Glad it's working though.
What FW version is currently loaded?
And you can access Tools/Schedules? What browser are you using when accessing the web pages?

I started with 1.00 firmware, loaded 1.01 when I was still not having success.   I can access Tools/Schedules no problem.  I use Chrome.
