Wifi is half as fast as wired
« on: March 04, 2012, 09:30:15 AM »

I just switched from DSL to cable and put the provided cable modem/router in bridge mode and using my existing dgl-4500 for routing. However, only when I'm wired to the router is when I'm getting the full speed of my service of 30mbps download and 5mbps upload. But on wifi, the speeds drop about half, to anywhere between 13-16mbps download and uploads slow a little as well. The router did not show any speed dropoff for wifi when I had DSL. I changed my settings from PPPoE (for DSL) to DHCP to use the new service but to no avail. What's going on?

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.

What ISP Modem make and model do you have?

Some things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall if you have this option.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.
Turn off Short GI, WLAN Partiton and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. I recommend CAT6 and the shorter the better if possible. I use a 1 footer. Swap cable between modem and router. Sometimes these in box cables are not made well.

Member, wireless connection and xfer speed will differ from wired speeds. This is the norm.

Wow big reply :o I'll do all your suggestions as soon as I can and come back with the results, got exam tomorrow :-[

In the mean time I can answer some of the questions:
Wireless mode: Mixed G/N
Security mode: WPA2
Wireless devices: iPad, iPhone, MacBook, Sony Vaio laptop, laser printer
Cordless house phones: nope
Other wifi routers: Yes but not mine, neighbors'

And yes wifi speeds should be slightly slower, but not that much slower, especially since the router is in the same room as all my wireless devices, and I have a small room :D

Ok midterms over, for now ::)

Hardware version: A2
Firmware: 1.22NA

There appears to be 6 wireless networks that I scanned that are not mine. It appears that everything was already set up the way you suggested, besides turning the gamefuel and extra wireless protection off, because I set up the 4500 as per the Xbox Live thread.

Other than that, it seems that some of my cables are Cat5e? I'm not 100% sure because some don't have a Cat version on them and for the ones that do, they say Cat5e. The one connecting the router to the modem is about 6 feet and I have no idea what type is it. But can it make that big of a difference between Cat5e and Cat6?

Having other WiFi near by can effect router wifi.

Cat6 is much better than Cat5e. It's cheap to upgrade.
