SharePort and PowerLine adapters
« on: April 02, 2012, 08:22:54 AM »

I'm using a DIR-655 router, where my Samsung MFP is connected to on the USB port. SharePort does not detect the USB device, it doesn't even show my router.

PC and router are connected through a pair of Sweex Powerline 85 adapters.

When removing the powerline adapters from the setup, everything works as expected. What is making the setup not work? My internet works fine over powerline ...

The power line adapters are probably not supporting of the USB and SP data using them. Only directly connected to the router will it work.
If you need connections to the printer beyond the power line adapters, I might suggest putting the printer on the LAN connection if it supports that or if not, put it on a USB to LAN adapter, thus making the USB into a network IP address and then connecting to the IP address.

I thought that was the whole point of SharePort ...  :-\

That is the point of SP, however it only works on supported connections. If your power line adapters are not compatible with SP then they are the problem holding up the connection, not SP. Suggesting the USB to LAN was made to provide you with an alternative solution to the power line incompatibility here.

Do you think that getting D-Link powerline adapters would solve the problem? I've been in contact with D-Link support since 6 weeks, but they still haven't answered that for me.

I have to disagree with your comment that incompatible adapters are the problem. The way I see it, SP is communicating in a non-standard protocol. Should they use a standardized protocol, no powerline adapter could cause an incompatibility.

I don't know if D-Link branded PL adapters would work. I suppose it kind of depends on what SP is using and what it supports and what the PLs are handling.

You have to be aware that if SP is in fact communicating in a non standard way, this is probably due to being proprietary to D-Link, then using standard or non DLink devices will probably be impacted by this as they don't know how or not programmed to know how to deal with D-Links non standard way of communicating using SP. This is the incompatibility issue here. So the problem lies in the PLs that your using and also IF DLinks PLs support SP communication or not is another question. Only way to find out is to try one or ask sales at DLink and see if SP and there PL devices are compatible and work together.

Hi,

I think your Powerline units should pass the SP data like any other data....  I think there might be some type of setting with the powerline units to turn off their security features....  See if that helps....

Data is data....  I use powerline units here for XBox360's in multiple rooms and they work fine....

SP is a proprietary program and the data is non standard to any other normal data platforms. I presume that DLink programs and designs this to only work on there HW. The OP said that when the PLs are removed, everything works. I presume that if DLink PLs are used then maybe SP would work over those PLs. Then again, SP maybe only be designed to work over direct and wireless connections.  :-\

Xboxes will work over PLs since they incorporate the standard wired and wireless networking platform so they would work over PL.

I'd like to point something out. When the pc and router are directly connected, I get to see something similar to this:

However, when pc and router are connected through powerline, shareport can't even detect the router device, so no gateway visible. I would assume the router is simply detected via TCP/IP traffic. Makes no sense at all.

Again, thats due to something on the PL not handling SP or the incompatibility with SP and this particular PL.

I recommend either Contacting DLink sales and ask about there PLs and SP, directly connect PC to router and use SP or use a USB device to LAN adapter alternative and not use SP with this adapter.

This is a incompatibility issue with this PL device.
