New modem, connection dropping
« on: April 15, 2012, 04:19:53 PM »

Hello, I am new to this forum and need help.  I have a DIR-655, FW 1.32NA.  I have not had any major problems with this router, although I was unable to update the firmware about a year ago, and the date and time on the router never stays correct.  I was trying to set up some time rules on the router a year ago, and because the router wouldn't hold the date/time, it wouldn't work. I tried calling tech support about this, and they couldn't solve my problem.  I eventually gave up because I didn't have the time to keep looking for a solution, and because the router was otherwise working.  I am only mentioning it now in case it sheds light on my current problem.

Yesterday I installed a new cable modem because my old one was coming to its end of life, per my ISP.  I installed a Motorola SURFboard SB6121.  Got it up and running, and most of my devices connected to the router with no problems.  I have one desktop PC connected directly to the router, I have a powerline adapter connected to another port.  All other devices connect wirelessly.  I noticed yesterday after the modem install that my wireless devices were having periodic connection dropouts.  This has continued throughout the day today. Also, I am unable to connect my DirecTV DVR via the powerline, which was connected fine before the modem swap.

I am not terribly tech savvy, so I don't really know what to try in order to troubleshoot this problem.  Can anyone here help me, or point me in the right direction?  I have looked around the router software, but I am not very well versed in how to use it, so I don't know what to try.  Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

What region are you located?

Some things to try:
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.
Turn off Short GI, WLAN Partition and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Not sure what you mean by region, but I am in North America, on East coast.  I tried some of your suggestions below.  I did not change the mode, which is currently Mixed, G, N & B.  I also did not turn off QoS, since I understand that is to optimize gaming, which my son uses.  My devices seem to be holding a connection well today, even before I made these changes, but I still can't get my DirecTV DVR to connect via the powerline connection.  It was connected fine prior to the modem swap.  I have rebooted the DVR, restored the network defaults, unplugged and reseated all powerline connections, set up a DHCP reserved IP address, but it still fails.  Any other suggestions as to why this device won't connect?  I'm going to try a different router port, but I doubt that will help.  Thanks.

Try inputing the reserved IP address for the DVR into the DMZ on the 655.
Also try a direct connection from the DVR to the 655. It should connect there as well.

Check all cabling from the DVR to the power line and to the router.

I recommend running the 655 wireless Mixed G and N modes, if your not using B modes, then theres no need to broadcast that mode.
