Few questions before I will buy:

- is it works with Access database files?
- is it works with Word doc files?
- is it works with ACT!6 database files?

I just want to know if I can use DNS-321 as a file server (r/w access to those files over mapped disks). Right now we are using old linux SMB server.

Also what about this:

Every time you reboot it you will have to recreate your network shares and their permissions, and you will have to recreate all your backup jobs. So don't get too attached to them.

Is it means that after each power failure I need to set all of those shared folders, then go back to workstations and re-mount them? That will be pretty lame...

There should be no reason why it would not work with those database and file types.

Regarding your quote, it is being addressed already and we are already in the process of working on the next firmware release and also the unit comes shipped with 1.00 firmware which did not have that original quoted issue.

Actually, I am going to speak against this solution.

Word write locks a file that is opened, opening subsequent times elsewhere in the network will result in that person having read only access at best.  The problem here is not the DNS, and it is not technically Word.  Word processors (or any office productivity software) was not designed for a multi-user environment.

If you have the possibility that the same document will be accessed by more than 1 person your options are to either have people make local copies (and find an acceptable policy concerning writing back each persons modified versions) or find a different solution.

I don't know how well Access or ACT!6 handle concurrent access, however given that you asked I would ensure that all applications you wish to use this for are congruent with a networked application.  I would imagine modern database software would have some networkability, I just can't say for certain.

I know about Word docs - at that case I need to have only read access at this same time for all users and write for the creator.

About Access and ACT!6 - both working well with multiusers files access and all files are stored on Debian linux server with SMB and Windows Network Mapping Disks so I have hope to get this same on DNS-321. Am I correct?

Yup, this is basically a commercially produced version of that box.

Except the Debian box is more customizable by the user.  The DNS-321 is limited
to the specific features that D-Link chose to implement.  For example, with respect
to Samba (and this may be relevant to your multi-user requirement) the DNS-321
samba server is setup with security mode = SHARE.  This means you can only assign
a single password to a share.  See http://www.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-HOWTO-Collection/ServerType.html for more information. 

The more flexible security mode = USER is not available (without voiding your warranty).

Look for the line 'security =' in the /etc/samba/smb.conf file on your Debian Box to see
which mode is currently working for you now.
