615 drops connection
« on: April 18, 2012, 03:14:00 PM »

For the last week or so my router has been shutting down periodically several times each day. I have been through the Internet connection with the Shaw Techs and can always connect by bypassing the router, so that isn't the problem. I can sometimes reconnect from my laptop by reconnecting to the network, sometimes by using the "repair" (on my XP laptop) option and sometimes I have to power down the router and restart it. Everything was working fine until the last 7 - 10 days and I can't think of anything that has changed.
I reset to factory defaults, reset the passkey, then followed FurryNutz' recommendations yesterday. It seems stable at the moment but I had to reset it several times yesterday (post changes) and I've already had to restart it once today and some devices have been unstable and most are not even online. I've also noticed that the time/date function isn't working. I've reset it twice and it won't keep up.
Am I expecting too much out of an old router? I've heard they can have a lifespan of 4 years or so, which puts this one into old age, but I don't want to replace it unless I know that age is the problem.
If I need to replace it, any suggestions?

Thanks, gairth

I wish everyone would initially post like you did. Nice, this is great info and helps us out forumlate better feed back and suggestions to try.  ;)

Question:
If you turn of the WIFI radio, does the router still exhibit the same behavior?

Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.

For your DHCP Reservations List - includes primary wired computer twice (?) item, does this PC have 2 NICS or one NIC and a wireless adapter? Might need to make sure the MAC address for this pc isn't the same and you don't have a duplicated entry, the router shouldn't allow this.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Cat6 is recommended.

Thanks, I try to make it easy for people to help me. Should be a no-brainer. ::)
Just after I posted this I had to power cycle it again. >:(

Not sure what you're referring to here. Which WIFI setting? Where?

Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.
There are other routers in the area (live in a condo complex) but none that show up on InSSIDer. Occasionally can connect to others nearby but few are unsecured and those that are have very low signal strength.

Newer HP has 1 NIC and wireless I believe.

Cat6 is recommended.
Been there, done that. Will do it again.

In Advanced/Wi-Fi Protected Setup there's an Enabled box. Is this what you mean?

Swapped out the Cat6 cable. No change. Dropped several more times last night but was able to reconnect by using "Review available wireless connections" on my XP laptop and reconnecting, or using the "repair" command. This morning it was working for a while and then had to do a power cycle again.
I'm getting ready to go shopping soon. I can't deal with the frustration. >:(

In Advanced/Wi-Fi Protected Setup there's an Enabled box. Is this what you mean? Turn of the radio by disabling from Setup/Wireless/Manual/disable or remove the check mark.

Ok. I removed the check mark from setup/wireless/manual Enable Wireless then saved and exited. My wired connections continued to work but the wireless connections no longer worked and the Network no longer appeared in the list of Available Wireless Networks (big surprise!). Any other suggestions?

I didn't get a response to my questions/comments about router life expectancy and the early model number of this router. It seems that the settings are not the issue here, but I don't really know for sure. I'm not aware of any changes to settings or environment prior to the problems starting which leads me to believe I'm dealing with a FAIL. Are there others out there with DIR-615 B2 routers that are still working okay?

Send me a PM with the ID and PW for teamviewer. Please be wire connected to the router.

I don't even want to mention how long FurryNutz spent online with me today, but it was above and beyond as far as I'm concerned. Thank you very much for your personalized attention. I will follow thru with your suggestions over the weekend and get back in touch next week with the results.
To anyone out there who is having trouble with their routers, I DL'd Teamviewer and PM'd FurryNutz and he was online right away to help. I highly recommend following his suggestions. Thanks again.
