DIR-855 + DWA-160 = Only 37Mbps in Vista x64!?
« on: April 03, 2009, 11:03:16 AM »

So I've got the above setup and when I place the two about 9 inches apart I get a full 300Mbps/100% Signal Quality on the Status page in the router, a full 300Mbps/Excellent Signal in my Wireless Manger but only 37Mbps. I am copying over the wireless to another PC thats hardwired into the LAN ports via Gigabit on the DIR-855. I have messed around with the QoS settings and completely disabled the 2.4Ghz band on the router and DWA-160, same speeds. I even turned off any encryption and am using MAC Filtering. I have also tried the 20Mhz band, 40Mhz and the Auto 20/40Mhz, same speeds.

Is there something I'm missing? The DWA-160 is Rev. A and I read about some problems with Vista x64 with this Revision, could that be the problem? Are there any other options I might have missed i the adapter or router?

UPDATE: I also ran the Vista tweak program from Speedguide.net (http://www.speedguide.net/read_articles.php?id=2574)  to no avail.

I think the issue is vista 64.  I gave up and don't use vista 64 because of network traffic speed and priority issues among many other reasons including digital driver signing.

Do you have SP1 installed?  Vista 64 plays network speed games with something called MMCSS (Multimedia Class Scheduler Service).  There are ways to modify how MMCSS works with registry tweaks once you have SP1 installed.  Google it.  Don't know if that is root cause for you, but when I had tons of issues trying to stream video in vista 64, I concluded it was.  No such issues with vista 32 or XP.

IMO, there really is not any reason to run vista 64 - I don't have a single program that is written to use 64 bit and most all software does not take advantage of it.  Vista 32 works fine - 64 is a nightmare.

I'll bet the 160 works fine on XP or vista 32.  I have a 642 card and it works as it should on XP.

Vista 64 here, no speed issues like those mentioned, before or after SP1.
