Well I finally registered after a week of lurking on the boards. I purchased a DIR-857 last week from Fry's to replace a year old Linksys E4200.
Couldn't wait to get this router up and running to compare it to the E4200 and to see if all the reviews were true. After configuring the proper MTU and a 6-8 hour marathon configuring the router from the wireless side from QOS/ DHCP, then static IP ( which is what I wanted all along) I was able to get a smooth wireless no lag on XBOX. I have to say thank you to Furry Nutz for his sticky, very helpful!!!!!
The gigabit wired LAN on my 3 Desktops after configuring the MTU is nice and snappy!!! Similar to the E4200 ( it has the
auto MTU feature).
The Wireless side the DIR-857 has the E4200 beat by a long shot. Way better wireless transmission both on the 2.4 and 5ghz bandwidth. I have a VERY STABLE signal verified by speedtest app on both my iPhone 4 and iPad 3 as well as my 5ghz Lappie!!!!!. This is where the linksys E4200 failed could not give a stable signal to any of my wireless clients. But the one thing I might suggest to other members is when configuring the wireless, use inSSIDer program to look at other wireless broadcasts and MANUALLY configure the channel...DO NOT USE AUTO CHANNEL...flaky at best. I like the fact the DIR-857 has wireless guest mode in BOTH the 2.4 & 5ghz....nice touch.
The 3.0 USB outback works great, in fact when I attached my 1TB HDD to the router it saw it and had all the parameters configured...easy. I installed the shareport plus app and maps out drive ontu my XP & 7 network.....simple easy and ...............it works. The E4200 was a bit of a challenge but eventually got it to work, no where near as easy as the Dlink.
Tested the HDD content over the wireless and the PS3 saw the DLNA default labeled DIR857 and was able to access my video content and it streamed NICELY.
This router does it all!!!!!! Finally I am back with Dlink it's a keeper

!!!!!!!!!!!! Anyone need a E4200

PS- I updated to F/W 1.01 last nite, I posted my results in that thread. In short all is well and stable, in fact after the upgrade, I feel the router is working even better over the wireless. Great hardware and F/W 1.01.
PSS- Just when you thought you have the latest and greatest Fry's post this on todays ads
