Narrowed down WiFi dropping to Galaxy Nexus
« on: May 28, 2012, 09:35:31 PM »

I've been recently having issues with the WiFi on my router.  It would randomly stop responding and wouldn't accept any connections.  It would still broadcast the SSID, but no devices could connect to it until I rebooted the router.  Then it would work fine for a few hours and then have the same issue.

I've narrowed down the cause of the issue to my new Galaxy Nexus phone.  I started having issues after I added it to the network, and couldn't confirm that it was the culprit until I left the WiFi on the Phone off for 4 days and didn't have a single problem with the router.

I've gone through most of the posts on this board, and have been trying different settings on my router.  No luck so far with it removing the problem, but I have a few more things to try and haven't yet tried G only, as I can't see the point of owning a N router and not being able to use it at the full speed.

If I happen to find a setting that works, I'll post my results.  This is mostly a FYI for people having problems...if you have an Android phone, try turning off the WiFi for a few days and see if your network works fine.

What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
What region are you located?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.

Some things to try:
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

Wireless Installation Considerations
What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try mixed G and N.
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.
Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
Turn off Short GI, WLAN Partition, and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Firmware: 1.01
Region: Washington, USA

ISP: Comcast Cable
Modem: Motorola Surfboard SB6120
No router in modem.

QoS: already OFF
Advanced DNS Services: No such setting in Setup/Internet/Manual
DNS Relay: Already ON
Reserved IP's: Already Reserved
DHCP On
Endpoint Independent setting: Doesn't exist under Advanced Firewall
uPnP & Multi-cast streaming: Already On (under Advanced/Advanced Network)

Wireless Modes: Mixed 802.11n and g
Channel Width: Auto 20/40
Wireless Channel: have tried both auto scan, and setting channels at different ends of the spectrum
Security mode: WPA-Personal
WPA Mode: Auto(WPA or WPA2)
Cihper Type: tried all, found AES seems to have higher signal and responsiveness
InSSIDer: don't have a computer with a WiFi card, so cannot use
WISH: Already OFF
WPS: Is this WiFi Protected Setup?  If so, then it is ON.
Short GI:  This was ON, will try OFF
WLAN Partition:  Already OFF
Extra Wireless Protection:  Don't Have

The devices connecting to the WiFi on a daily basis are 2 TiVo 802.11g network adapters, 1 DAP-1525 in bridge mode over 802.11n with a XBox 360 wired into it, 1 HTC Evo 4G cell phone over 802.11g, and 1 Samsung Galaxy Nexus over 802.11n.  The only other device that connects that often to the wireless is my Kindle.

Tried 20mhz only, still dropped after around 3 hours.  Trying turning off WPS...I had used it to set up a few devices, but I guess I don't need it on all the time.

No luck with that setting either.  Did some more forum searching on multiple sites and it seems that DLink routers tend to have issues with Android/Samsung phones...joy.

Trying a static IP on the phone to see if that works.

Since you don't have a way to find out what other WiFi routers are around you, I guess you might need to manually set a channel, starting at 11 or 1 and work your way up each channel and see if you can find a stable channel. It would be helpful to see if you can get a friend or neighbor with a Laptop and install INSSIDer on it and see who's around you and what channels are being used. Could narrow down if there are few or many or none. If none then this could mean there is a problem with the 657. If few or many other WiFi routers near by, could mean that the channels are being used up and the router is trying to find a clear channel and thats when you see the wifi drop. I would also test this router at a friend or family place thats not in the same area and see if the WiFi problem follows. IF not, then you'll know.

One other thing you can try is to lower the power output from HIGH to Medium and create a smaller foot print broadcast.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using teamviewer if your interested. Its safe and secure.

I have 2 of these same routers and each one has performed just fine. However I only have a couple of neighboring WiFi routers near me.

I live in the suburbs, and have maybe 5 houses within range, so I highly doubt that there is a lot of router interference.  Plus, this setup has been up and running for 6 months or so with absolutely no problems until I got the new phone.

A static IP didn't help any.  I've tried every channel individually, and no changes there.  I'm dropping it down to G only as a last resort, but more than likely I'm just going to end up returning the phone on Saturday and picking up the new HTC Evo.  Have a friend who got theirs last week via pre-order and they have no problems with it on their DLink N router.

Might have them bring there phone over and test on our router if you can. Seems like this is a HW issue with this particular phone. Keep us posted on how it goes with the next phone.

Well...24 hours with the new HTC Evo and it's had no problems whatsoever.  This is even with all of the original default settings turned back on, so there was definitely some sort of hardware compatibility issue with the router and the Samsung phone.

Glad you got the new phone working and is working well with the 657. I would presume that there was just an HW issue with the other phone as your new one seems to be working correctly with the 657 router. Enjoy.

I too encountered the same problem with my dir657 and the Galaxy Nexus . I can use the phone on a dir601 with the same settings and it works great. I am assuming the problem is with the 657 compatibility as the phone works fine with other routers. I could be wrong and the compatibility problem may be with the Galaxy Nexus. Looking forward to a solution as i cant get a new phone and my dir657 is 5 months old. Meanwhile i'll just keep using my older dir601

Wellllll  ,after doing some reading ,switching to TKIP only and mixed mode n,g seems to have fixed the problem. Its strange because the DIR-601 i have works fine in AES and N only. Not sure if its the Nexus or the DIR-657.

We've seen this before with other Nokia and Samsung on various routers. Why I mentioned testing TPIK only as a test to see if it resolved the problem. I presume that this is a cell phone HW issue. I'm currently using the 657 on WPA2 only and AES only with my iPhone 4s. Working good.

Glad yours is working. Enjoy.
