DIR-655 and DGL-4500 crash when receiving DELBA
« on: June 28, 2012, 09:12:32 AM »

Hi, I work for a phone manufacturer and we have what seems to be a definite bug in the D-Link FW. I am not sure if it affects more than the two models I listed in the subject line, but I suspect it could be the case.

OTA traces reveal that if a DELBA action frame is sent to the router, it will crash shortly thereafter and reboot. I saw some other posts of people seeing the AP reboot, it may or may not be for this very reason.

If the AP is configured not to use 11n, the issue disappears.

If the client sends ADDBA with a inactivity timeout of 0 (meaning DELBA is never sent), there is no issue.

D-Link, please contact me privately ASAP to resolve this issue, as it seems like a major one!

Thanks,
Bill

These are basically user to user forums.  If you have a problem it is best to give them a call directly.

Sending these kinds of data frames to the router may not be normally something a average home user would send to these routers. It's possible that this kind of data is not handled or supported by the FW.

Please contact DLink support and talk to someone at level 2 maybe and see if they can help you or escalate this and see if there is an issue with the FW or if this kind of data is supported by the FW.

Hi FurryNutz, these are actually frames that should be sent automatically by the client and AP as part of the 11n specifcation. So you are right that a user doesn't send them directly (user would not even know they are being used).

What is the best way to contact "level 2" support?

wait for it...
Update:
I've passed this on to DLink. It has been reviewed by Dlink. I hoped they would comment however might be looking into more resources about this.

I would contact Dlink here: http://www.dlink.com/support/
And select Contact Options from the menu bar. Find the product model your inquiring about and call. Ask for escalated level support person if the inital person can't provide any information. Dlink may still comment here at a later time.

Please provide router and client side HW and set up details if you wish to here.
Most users are not experiencing any issues with there routers at this time.
Maybe some insight on what your doing and how things are setup will provide a better picture and maybe we can offer some suggestions to try.

Thanks FurryNutz. I will try the contact option you mentioned.

I'm responsible for solving inter-op issues between our phones and various APs. In this specific case, the user saw that the AP was rebooting shortly after the phone associated. We later found what I posted - that the DELBA frame seems to eventually crash the AP FW. The BA session is started at association, and is later terminated after 10 seconds (per our ADDBA frame) of idle, and this is when DELBA is sent to the router.

Here are some of the details on the DIR-655 model we debugged:

A2 HW rev
Firmware 1.35NA (latest)
Security WPA2
Mixed mode b/g/n

Unfortunately I can't mention the phone information here since it is not released yet. It is Android-based, but that really doesn't matter. :)

Most likely this issue is not observed by most users for several reasons - 1) client doesn't support 11n or BA sesions, 2) AP is not configured for 11n, 3) other STAs/AP restrict the use of BA sessions, 4) client uses a timeout value of 0 (infinite) for BA sessions. But even so we would like to understand why it crashes, and if there is anything we can do to prevent it without changing the inactivity timeout value (as this actually causes problems with other APs, go figure..)

You have an older HW version of the 655 router and probably not developed anymore.
I wonder if Rev B1 would exhibit the same thing.  ???

Good question. I am working on getting the details on the other AP that we saw failing - DGL-4500.

Theres A1 and A2s for the DGL-4500. Be aware that the 4500 has probably fallen off the development radar as well, unfortunately. Such a great router for its time, and still is. Not sure if DLink would do anything to fix these older models unless they consider it something critical.
