problem installing this adapter
« on: August 02, 2007, 08:45:31 AM »

i have 2 of these dir 655 routers and 3 of the dwa 552 network cards. one of the routers is at my daughter's 2.5 hours away and she has a 552 card installed with the shipped version of the drivers. it's been working fine but last sunday the computer was moved in the house from the basement bedroom to a mainfloor bedroom (about 15 ft away from the router). it was working fine for about 3 days post the move so i don't think that was any issue. my daughter called me last night and said the wireless was not working. i tried to diagnose over the phone starting with can you see the dlink wireless manager icon on the toolbar. she said no, it was not there so i assumed corrupted driver. same thing happened once before when i was there and i simply uninstalled the device (through system properties) and reinstalled. i walked her through an uninstall and install last night as follows:

go to system devices- remove the software. it did not ask for a reboot at this point so she did not. went to load "drivers" option with the driver cd and started that process. . a message comes up to the effect that another incidence is running. told her to exit and do a reboot. she did, said new hardware was detected. she starts the install cd again, asks her if she wants to use ms zero config wireless or whatever it's called, i tell her to say no..she does that. it finishes..i tell her to look for a dlink icon on bottom..nothing there. there is a wireless networks button though so she clicks on that..i think it said cannot find wireless network..she clicks the find wireless network option..nothing happens. to me, it sounded like the d-link wireless manager didn't even install given no icon..so i tell her to look for dlink in programs and she finds that..there's a dlink wireless manager option and i think another option..i tell her to click on the wireless manager..and nothing happens. so it sounds to me like the drivers are not..or are only partially loaded..i'm going to her house for the weekend so i'm taking copies of the 2 most recent versions of the drivers with me.

any thoughts? usually not this troublesome. by the way, checked that the network adapter is showing as installed and hardware is working fine and it says it is.

 >:( I have a DIR 655 and I have 2 computers a desktop (generic brand) and an IBM/Lenovo Z60m with its own wireless built in.  My Lenovo can connect and manage my DIR 655 without a problem using WPA-PSK or not.  I tried to install a DWA 552 in my desktop and the first time it failed half way through the install complaining it couldn't find the hardware! I manually installed the drivers and it found itself.  I deinstalled just to be safe and reinstalled everything. I could see my DIR 655 SSID being broadcast and the signal strength was 89%, but try as I might I cannot connect with the DIR 655.

 >:( I spent an hour with D-Link customer support and did everything including reinstalling yet again. They gave up and told me to load the latest drivers and call us in the morning. I can see the SSID network broadcast no problem but I cannot connect. Now I've been playing with wireless networks for a long time but this one takes the cake.

 >:( The bottom line is my Lenovo with an Intel PRO/Wireless 2915ABG card will connect to my D-Link DIR 655 router and
my D-Link DWA 552 PCI card WILL NOT CONNECT to the D-Link DIR 655 router - WOW, this sux.

what i find weird is with 2 other computers..and this 3rd one, all installs were simple and worked initially and updating drivers on the first 2 went fine so i have to try that next. i'm hoping once i'm actually where the computer is, it will be an easy fix but shouldn't be anything complicated, assuming the hardware is fine.

Just a question but are whats everyone using?.  The Dlink software to configure your internet connection or the microsoft zero config?.  I don't know why but I ran the zero config and disabled then reenabled and its been running like a charm ever since.

Somewhere I read that MS zero config worked better than DLink's utility with this card. That's what I did, and mine's running great.
