Did my RAID just fail?
« on: May 12, 2010, 08:37:11 PM »

We had some storms come through the midwest just recently and I lost power. I my 323 had turned off so i turned it back on. Now i can not longer see my shares through windows explorer or with my PS3.

If I connect through ssh i can see all of my media is still there and I can even copy/paste from the device so my data is still there. So why is it my ps3/computer can no longer see it?

I logged into the web interface to see if anything jumped out, i saw this:

Code: [Select]
HARD DRIVE CONFIGURATION:
Click 'Next' to begin formatting the replacement drive. Re-synch will take place after the restart.

I'm assuming it thinks i put a new hard drive in, so maybe one failed? The lights on the front are still blue (not amber indicating something went wrong).

Here are my questions:
1.) Do i test both drive individually in an external usb enclosure and determine which one is corrupted if any?
2.) do i simply reconfigure/resync to raid 1 and hope everything is good? Further, by doing this will that even fix the issue that i can't see my data?

UPDATE:

So i reset to factor default and now i can view my data through windows, but I believe i still have a bad disk. I can not run SCAN DISK and it still wants me to re-sync my "new drive"

Sounds like the drive got corrupted.  This is one of the many reasons we keep saying RAID of any level is not backup!

I'd remove the drive and test it in a computer using the disk manufacturer's diagnostics first.  No reason to try syncing if it doesn't work.

I'd consider picking up Ext2Fsd (http://www.ext2fsd.com/) to mount your drives in Windows and do some backup before rebuilding the RAID anyway.  You really DO need backup...

So for what its worth, I tested both drives individually and one of them wanted reformatted everytime the NAS booted up. So i formatted as an individual disk and it failed showing:

Quote
Hard Drive(s) Formatting Failure. (Error Code:107)

I read around that fun_plug is to blame for this, so i renamed it and then got this error:

Quote
Hard Drive(s) Formatting Failure. (Error Code:114).

I am finding zero information on error 114

Like I said, remove it and test it on a PC using the disk manufacturer diagnostic, it'll tell you a lot more.

I have spent 10 hours since my RAID-1 failed. The right drive (Caviar Blue 500 GB) for some reason will not format after a degradation. Both drives are exactly the same bought at the same time.
Things I have tried:
1) Remove partitions in Windows on the right drive
2) Backup the data on the Left drive and reformat the drives as single discs one at a time. The left drive reformatted fine.
3) Use WD Disc utility (LLF)

The drive in questions works perfecting in my windows 7 rig. The drive has no physical issues. The internet has very little on this code (Hard Drive(s) Formatting Failure. (Error Code:114)) and I would like to know what it is.

Has anyone figured this out?

Is it a S.M.A.R.T. drive? Just because it reformats ok does not mean there are no data integrity issues. Drives are self-correcting these days. You should run a true diagnostic program on the drive and read the S.M.A.R.T. data if compatible.
