DNS-321 fans and firmware
« on: July 17, 2012, 09:32:26 AM »

I was checking my dns-321 settings today as my fans have been running non-stop all summer.
I realize it could be because of the heat, but when the drives spindown, where is the heat coming from?

Additionally, I looked at the support page for DLink and found the only reference for the DNS-321 is the "DNS-321 1TB" found here:
http://dlink.com/us/en/home-solutions/support/product/dns-321-1tb-1tb-sharecenter-2-bay-network-storage-device

Is that the same device just renamed?

If it is, why does my firmware have an older date?
My firmware:
Current Firmware Version :    1.03
Firmware Date :    08/17/2009

From the link above:
1.03
10/6/2010

Dates are different.
Any suggestions?

Even if the HDDs are hibernating, the DNS-321 still generates heat. The unit contains a CPU and circuit boards that are on and performing work. This heat is transferred to all components within the case, and will contribute to the overall HDD temperature.

Is your DNS-321 in an open or enclosed space? Is the power supply sitting close by? An enclosed space will contribute to heat retention.

Additionally, I looked at the support page for DLink and found the only reference for the DNS-321 is the "DNS-321 1TB" found here:

D-Link released two versions of the DNS-321: diskless model (i.e. no HDDs) and 1 TB model (i.e. 1 HDD included). The DNS-321 1TB model was discontinued.  The DNS-320 and DNS-325 are the successors to the legacy 2-bay NAS (DNS-321, DNS-323).

If it is, why does my firmware have an older date?

Not sure what dates you are referring to.  The file publication dates? What sites?

Got it.  Everything makes sense.

The dates are (I'm assuming) dates released.
I don't see my DNS-321 (which was diskless) on the support page.  I only see the 1TB version.
I would assume they both use the same firmware.

I'm just curious if there were two versions of the 1.03 firmware released and if I should download and update.
I don't know why I would have a firmware 1.03 date of 2009 when the support page shows it being released in 2010.  That makes me think that one is newer.

What is the link to the support page you are referring to with the 2010 date?

Well that's interesting.  It was the link I had in my first post.
Now when I try to access it, the page is 404 Not found.

Check out the support page here:
http://dlink.com/us/en/home-solutions/support?tab=all&po=true

I had clicked on the DNS-321 1TB link and the firmware that was available there had a 2010 date.

Someone at D-Link must have made a change to something.

What browser are you using? The new D-Link website has had some issues with Firefox and Opera (page not found...).

It's working again.
If you click my link above, then on DNS-321 1TB, look at the firmware 3.0 date.

I would not rely on that date. All of the documents on the page are dated 10/6/2010, including the older versions of the firmware, drivers, documentation, etc. I'm sure that date was related to when the files were linked to the site, not when they were released.

If you download the DNS-321 firmware v1.01 file from the new website, unpack the zip file, and open the properties of the firmware file, you will see that the last modification date of the firmware is 2008.
