So I have just bought my DLink 325 with 1TB included harddrive.

The first thing i did was google for an update to the firmware. And found this thread http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=49944.0 and applied that firmware.

It updated without any hassles. But I got some problems (mainly with UPnP, no music plays for example, but video does. but video does not play over smb) and I really want to downgrade to see if that fixes the problems.

This is because I bought the dlink in Sweden, and I think the update was for the US version (is there any swedish/EU version out?).

Well. I downloaded the official swedish 1.02, and tried to "apply it". It didnt work. It just got stuck in the "applying firmware, dont turn off device" loop.


Does anyone know how to downgrade? Or anyone also have these problems with music not playing over Upnp/dlna, and video having problems over smb?

Regarding the firmware, you should download the release 1.02b3 from swedish FTP site (ftp://ftp.dlink.se/) if you've purchased your DNS325 in Sweden.

Try to power-off the NAS and after one minute, to power-on it again, then try to upgrade the firmware using the NAS built-in firmware update procedure.

Ya I understood that I should have official versions for my country after i already installed 1.03. It's exactly that file you linked i try to install now, but without success.

Try to reset NAS using the Reset button on device (see the manual for further details about hardware reset). Take note that you will lose all settings inside NAS (for this reason it is better to save the current configuration settings on a file and after reset, load it again). I have no idea if reset will also affect data inside NAS and if eventually will affect also RAID configuration (if any).

If there is no other way to push a downgrade, you have to wait for an official release suitable for your country or if you need an usable device now, you are obliged to send NAS to D-Link support, hoping that they can downgrade your NAS under warranty (D-Link tech support may protest for a free repair, so you may even pay the repair!!!).

For the a/m reasons, I prefer to wait an official firmware update for my country (I am mainly worried to lose data after a wrong/not-supported firmware update), I want to keep NAS under warranty (the italian laws force all companies to provide two years of warranty for all products).

While the DNS-325 is powered-on, press and hold the reset button on the rear of the DNS-325 for > 8 seconds. This procedure will erase all user settings and bring the unit back to the factory default settings, but will not change the installed firmware version. The reset should not impact any stored data or HDD configurations (e.g. RAID).

Thanks for the replies. I have successfully "reset" the device to factory settings. But the firmware stands at 1.03, and I still can't change it. (have tried to apply 1.02 again).

The device works, but as I said, I got problems with both upnp as well as smb. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. It works quite well on my iphone (except music), but not good at all on my Xbox for example.

SMB shares on my Mac also are very unstable.

Guess I have to call DLink Tech support and see if my warranty can cover this.

They should really implement some kind of "backup and restore settings + firmware" before each upgrade. Or at least allow downgrade. :/

Why would you use SMB on a Mac, when DNS also supports OS X-native AFP? I can assure you that the DNS-325 AFP server works quite well and supports all Apple-specific features (eg metadata, bundles etc).

What makes you believe that the UPnP server has any regional differences?
When you look around in this forum, then you'll see that there seem to be more cases when it doesn't play than those where it does.

PS when you fun-plug, you will be in a position to deploy the TwonkyServer 7 instead.
PPS you'll also be in a position to fix Avahi service announcements so, that besides SMB also AFP-over-TCP would be advertised on Bonjour, so you can Mac-natively mount the NAS volume(s).

Maybe you are right. I just assumed that the product should be working correctly (especially after a few firmware update to iron out bugs). But you are saying that upnp support is shaky? Regardless of firmware?

Maybe I should try this "fun-plug" thing. But I have no idea how to do it. You don't happen to have a guide or something with step-by-step how to install it? Would greatly appreciate that, else I just have to Google a bit more.

Never mind! I found a guide and got it installed. Twonky works perfectly! DLink should really look over their software. The hardware is great, and at a good price, but I don't think the software is up to par.

This actually solved all my problems.

I hope you noticed the hotlink to Twonky 7 installation guide in my original post  
Now that you have console access to your NAS-Linux, you can copy this file to
/etc/avahi/services name it afp.service
