Please help!
« on: August 17, 2012, 11:48:52 AM »

I have read around, but I am not sure what it is I want to do.

Here is my dilemma...

I have an ARRIS Docsys3 modem from Comcast which has a built in WiFi router. I also have a DIR-655. The Modem is in my office and I have a 100' Ethernet cable running through my attic to my front room where the dir-655 is located.

I use the DIR for WiFi as well I have it connected to my TV and Xbox.

I use the ARRIS Modem for WiFi as well I have it connected to another Xbox and a Desktop computer.

Here is what I want to do...

I want to have everything on 1 network, Dir-655 uses IP address 192.168.0.1-100 and the ARRIS uses ranges 10.0.0.1-100. I want to be able to connect to the dir-655 and have the IP for that connection join up with the 10.0.0... network so that I will be able to transfer files freely throughout the network.

Not sure if that made sense.

I want everything on one network. Right now when I connect a laptop to the DIR-655, I can not access the printer that is connected to the Desktop on the ARRIS modem. I have to connect to the ARRIS modems WiFi to then use the printer on the desktop.

Likewise, I want to use the media extender on the Xbox connected to the DIR-655 with the Desktop connected the the ARRIS modem, but I can not because of the to different networks.

I have tried to explain this to the best of my ability, if you have any questions please let me know. Thanks so much for any one that can help.

What model # Arris modem do you have?

Heres the deal, your going to encounter Double NAT. Basically you have 2 routers trying to router traffic and will mostly be a connection issue between each router since each one is trying to translate something that has been already translated by one or the other. Also when you have some devices connected to the modem and others connected to the 655, they aren't able to communicate well since there are 2 different subnets and IP address pools that differ.

A couple of options. Since the Arris modem is probably not bridgeable, however it may have a user management web page and if you can gain access to that, see if there is a DMZ option. If there is, Input the IP address of the 655 that it gets from the Arris modem and input that into the DMZ. This should allow any and all outside and inside traffic to flow in both directs with out any double NAT issues.

If the Arris modem does not have a DMZ option or if your unable to access the modems web page, I might review the following for the DIR-655 Turning a router into an AP. Doing this will and should allow any devices connected to the 655, wired or wireless to communicate seamlessly with each other an the internet.

Your basically constrained by the ISP modem and it's function as a modem and router. Preferred networking set up would be not to have the ISP modem incorporate a built in router for use with these external home routers that DLink has.

Thank you very much for your quick response FurryNutz.

The ARRIS model number is: TG852G/CT

I have given that page a look, but I was not sure if that was going to do what I wanted. It sounds to me like it will. First, I will try the DMZ settings as I am already a little familiar with working with router settings and see if that will resolve my issue. Is there any settings I would have to change on the DIR-655 as well?

Again, thanks for your reply. :)

If you can use DMZ, then you might use the following on the 655:
Might Turn off QoS and Traffic Shaping to see what works best, ON or OFF.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

Link>Wireless Installation Considerations
Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
What wireless devices do you have connected?

Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
Try turning off Short GI, WLAN Partition, and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

[SOLVED]

I tried DMZ with not much luck, I used that guide and turned my router into an AP, Works perfectly.

Thank you sooo much, you have been of great help, I hope I can return the favor someday. :)
