This unit is good for backing up files but horrible for UPnP AV streaming.

Dlink needs to spend time addressing this units ability to stream files to DLNA media players before saying it has a feature that clearly doesn't work for HD.

If we wanted to watch Standard Def still it would be 1999 and not 2012.

Furthermore. UPnP servers can't access the 'shares'. So I don't have the option of using one with built in transcoder like Samsung Allshare. Or WDTV Media Player via Network Shares.

For the price you are better off building a small Linux box from the ground up just for streaming.

Not all DLNA media players are created equal.  I have friends that gave up on media streaming because equipment from different manufacturers would not work together.  I also have other friends that have no problems - all their equipment is from the same manufacturer.

What I am saying is, don't blame D-Link until such time all manufacturers of DLNA get together and make their equipment work together independently of whoever makes what.

I have a WDTV streaming media player and I can stream HD movies from the DNS-320 network shares. I can also stream photos and music from network shares.

I acknowledge that the built-in UPnP server is awful, but I can also stream movies and videos via dlna to my wdtv and to my samsung galaxy ace. Moreover, an app called 2Player allows me to select the music tracks I have on the DNS-320 and play them on the WDTV, via dlna. I can switch songs from every corner of my house. With other apps, I can stream my whole photo collection to my cell phone or tablet. I had also streamed HD video to a xoom tablet, and I can actually choose a movie from my entire collection and play it on a tablet.

Granted, the firmware has its flaws and is perfectible. And I had experienced video streaming issues. But, so far, I have been using it for more than six months mainly for streaming.

I have problems...maybe you can help?

I just bought a Samsung smart tv.  I mainly went with the smart tv so I can watch netflix and the movies on my nas, which is a dns-320 with two mirror 2 terabyte drives.  The dns-320 shows up on the source list of the samsung tv but none of the contents show up.  I've got a bunch of mkv's, iso's, mp3's, and jpg's on it.

From what I have gathered so far from the lacking Samsung directions it's supposed to play all of that stuff from any dlna server.  D-link says the dns-320 has a dlna server.  I have the upnp av server on the dns-320 enabled for the entire volume.  What am I doing wrong/not doing?

For 50 bucks the dns 320 is just cheap storage, if you want to use a server for anything else, buy a Synology, light years ahead of d-link, but youll pay 4 times the price.

Easiest thing to do, NAS to router, laptop running XBMC connected to router/TV. Done.

Youll never have any streaming issues with any formats ever again
