Hey this is the setup i currently have and i am getting internet in waves like the speed will constantly go up and down from 0 to over 1Mbps every 15-20 seconds.

Is this caused by the modem being incompatible or something. An answer to this question would be really appreciated as its really frustrating me.

Thanks

Link>Welcome!
What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
What region are you located?
Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
Has a Factory Reset been performed?

This model modem device has a built in router and WiFi already.
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
Double NAT
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.

Please also review this:
Bridge Mode vs Relay vs Acess Point (AP) / Routers vs Dedicated Access Points (AP)

If the ISP modem can not be bridge, or the ISP Modems DMZ can not be accessible or is not made available, and ISP Modems onboard WiFi disabled, it's possible to use the 645 as an AP however you'd be defeating most of the features that the 645 comes with. This is a good router.

Hey thanks for the reply,

The hardware version is A1 and i just updated the firmware to version 1.3 (which didn't fix the problem).
I live in New Zealand.
The problem seems to be the same when wired or wireless.
no i haven'd done a factory reset, do you think this would help, i'd rather not do this if i don't have to.

I the modem doesn't seem to have a bridge mode does this mean it is incompatible and causing the problem?
I also cant find anything about a DMZ.

If the modem can't be bridged or you can't find a DMZ option, then any external router will not work well with that ISP modem.

Only a couple of things you can do:
1. Switch to an ISP modem with out a built in router and WiFi.
2. Use a D-Link DAP model AP instead of the DIR-645 with this ISP modem.
3. Turn the DIR-645 into an AP. Might work however most of the features will not be usable. WiFi will be.

Sure you can't find any DMZ option on the ISP Modem?
