D-Link DIR 651 unable to connect to internet properly
« on: September 21, 2012, 09:01:14 AM »

hi guys i need your help i got D-LINK DIR 651 Wireless Router, so i upgrade this Router to this firmware 1.10NA, release on Aug-24-2012, after this this i configure thois Router with my Modem MOTOROLA SB5101N. So the internet is working fine about an hour, there after on my Modem Send/Received light totally goes OFF, now there is no internet at all in my Home.

So i unplug all & i connect my Modem directly to my PC after this i am getting internet perfectly on my PC. Then i call to my ISP they said this is not their problem from theoir site all OK.

After this again i connect my DIR 651 Router & i did FACTORY DEFAULT, still same problem. So i like to know "HOW TO FIX THIS ROUTER TO GET PROPER WIRELESS INTERNET ACCESS ON ALL MY DEVICES".

CURRENTLY I AM ON THIS FIRMWARE :
Before Upgrade Shows : Hardware Version A1, Firmware Version : 1.00NA, release on Mar-03-2012.
After Upgrade Shows : Hardware Version A1, Firmware Version : 1.10NA, release on Aug-24-2012.

Thanks for your help.

Link>Welcome!

What region are you located?
Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?

This ISP Modem is getting to be an out of date modem. I might suggest that you ask your ISP if there is a newer model they can send you or if they allow you to use your own, I HIGHLY recommend getting into a Motorola SB 6 series cable modem. There are 6121 and 6141s available.

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1.
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules.

WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed

Link>Wireless Installation Considerations
What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?

Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
Try turning off Short GI, WLAN Partition, and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Enable WMM Enable Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using Link> teamviewer if your interested. Its safe and secure.

If you can answer some of the questions presented, this will help us get a better idea of what you have and what is configured and give you better feedback and suggestions to try. There maybe other external interferences happening that is causing this. We need to see if we can get a better idea if your system and such. Doing FW updates will probably not help if there are other factors involved. You are at the most current version of FW.

Please help us help you.

I am using my own Motorolas SB5101N mODEM.
i am in Ontario, Canada.
my isp name is Acanac.
i am using WIRELESS D-LINK DIR 651 ROUTER. No other Wireless Routers connected in my Home. But before this i use another d-link Router which work fine, the problem with that Router is very low signals supply to my other Devices, because of this resion i bought this Router DIR 651 D-LINK, which will supply very good signals to all my devices, but only work for an hour, there after total internet dead.

When i connect my Dir 651 to sb5101n then i get wireless internet access for an hour , there after on my modem SEND/RECEIVED lights totally OFF, so no internet at all.

thanks

Try some of the suggestions that I mentioned?

If your modem is showing that send and rcv go off, I would also check the modems logs at 192.168.100.1 and see if you notice anything in the logs around when this happens.
I would also ask your ISP to check line levels. Be aware that any tv line splitters on the cable line going into the ISP modem will lower the levels. Might ask for a newer model cable modem. I HIGHLY recommend getting into a Motorola SB 6 series cable modem. There are 6121 and 6141s available.

I would check the cable between the ISP modem and router, swap out for a new one and test.
Turn OFF the WiFi radio and test the router to see if the same thing happens. Will help some in narrowing down where the problem may be. Need to see if wired only is doing this when wireless is OFF on the router. If not then we can look at your wireless settings.

Try some of the suggestions as well. Reserve IPs on the router for all devices.

Keep us posted.
