VPN - novice help
« on: October 29, 2012, 05:53:48 PM »

Hello, I am in charge of our small business network.  I am kind of a novice and could use some help setting up a VPN for one of our remote employees.  We used to use terminal services for him to log in remotely, but since the server died, we would like him to be able to access the file server via VPN.

I found a nice guide http://www.pcworld.com/article/210562/how_set_up_vpn_in_windows_7.html to set it up in windows, but am having some trouble with the router settings.  The IP address of the router is listed on the Status page, and I used that to point to for my outgoing VPN.  Then inside the network, I found the local IP address of the file server to connect to and DHCP reserved its IP.

After that, I went into Advanced - Port Forwarding then set a rule for PPTP, TCP port 1723, UDP blank, pointing to the local IP of the file server.  I also checked Advanced - Firewall Settings and the box for PPTP is checked.

When testing the connection from my home computer, I get stuck at verify username and password with an 806 error.  Can anyone help out with this?  Am I even close?
