2x2TB standard format upgrade to 2x3TB questions
« on: November 07, 2012, 05:18:35 AM »

Hey everyone, I've been reading thru the forum here for a while since buying my 320.
I come to you all today with a question reguarding upgrading drives.

currently my 320 has 2x2TB western digital green drives in standard format, I want to replace them both with 3TB RED drives also in standard format.  How would you recomend I do this?

Is it as simple as replacing both drives to have them formatted, then swap one of the 2tb's in and copy data over to the new drive, then just switch to the new set?

can I run the local backup slot 1 to 2, old drive to new, and then swap them out for the next set?

Procedure...

  • Label the 2TB HDDs as "#1" and "#2" using a marker
  • Label the 3TB HDDs as "#1" and "#2" using a marker
  • Power down the DNS-320
  • Remove 2TB HDD #1 and #2 and install 3TB HDD #1 and #2
  • Format the new 3TB HDDs as Standard Volumes
  • Power down the DNS-320
  • Remove 3TB HDD #2 and install 2TB HDD #1
  • Schedule local backup from 2TB HDD #1 to 3TB HDD #1
  • Power down the DNS-320
  • Remove both HDDs
  • Install 3TB HDD #2 and 2TB HDD #2
  • Schedule local backup from 2TB HDD #2 to 3TB HDD #2
  • Power down the DNS-320
  • Remove 2TB HDD #2 and install 3TB HDD #2

** Make sure you have a full backup of your data prior to performing this or any other data migration procedure **

Again, please backup your data first in case things don't work out as expected.
Post back and let us know how things turn out.  ;)
