DNS-320 second HDD and backup
« on: December 01, 2012, 08:33:23 AM »

Hi!
For some time I used DNS-320 with one HDD as file server in small office. All files created during this time was saved on this one HDD. Then one PC broke down and I took its HDD to put in as second HDD in DNS-320. To make it safe and accidentally not format my first drive, I took out first HDD with my valuable data, put "new" HDD in, and made quick install form the disk. Then I inserted first HDD with data, but DNS-320 does not see it. I took "new" HDD out and left the first with data in but DNS-320 still cant see it.
Please help!
And with backup i want to get the second HDD working like OSX Time Machine for first HDD - makes backups for one file different versions with option to restore erased files. Is it possible?

Do you have a backup of your data or is the problematic HDD the only copy?

Thats the point I dont have copy of data. This HDD in DNS-320 was only place where all data was stored. Thats why I tried this step with second HDD in the first place.

Both HDD are good. The one with data worked fine before I took it out. And I took it out because "new" HDD was not new but from another PC with unnecessary information on it. I was afraid accidentally mix them and format the one with information. Setup went fine and "new" HDD is now blank and I can see it. But the problem is that that DNS-320 does not see previous HDD with information. Even if I take out "new" blank HDD and leave only first HDD with data on it, DNS-320 shows that no HDD present.

I realize this is after the fact, but it's worth saying regardless: you should always maintain at least one copy of all critical data on a separate physical storage device, especially before performing any form of maintenance or changes to the primary storage location. DNS-320 - Data Backup vs. Redundancy.

That said, I presume you formatted the original HDD as a Standard Volume. You can try using one of the data recovery products mentioned on the following sticky post: DNS-320 - Data Recovery (Windows PCs).
