VPN
« on: August 03, 2013, 12:19:11 PM »

I am running DIR655 SuperN router attached to my Modem in My office in the front of the house and DAP1522 bridge in the back of the house both units have both wired and wireless connections , mostly wireless and the whole system has worked for several years without a hickup HiFive to Dlink . I now want to connect to VPN for some business connections from China and my work office in the US. I would like to put my entire home network on this remote VPN . I read that there is a software available to make this happen called DD-WRT which is not compatible with my router , and I read the DIR655 is already configurable for this purpose without this software . I dont understand enough to know why the router doesnt connect to the VPN as any other Network connection . Can somebody shed some detailed light on this please , and if configurable what specifically do I need to change to use the 655 in this manner.

VPN isn't my expertise however I presume if you review the search on the forums might result in some information. I presume Virtual Server rules will be needed on the DIR-655. I also presume that other 3rd party VPN applications might be needed.

@ FurryNutz
Thanks for your reply .. I have been doing my home work , and I have actually tried out one of the VPN networks and measured speed . That was very enlightening , seems my normal 40 Mbs down and 15 Mbs up was reduced to 5 Mbs down and .8 Mbs up on the VPN. At first I thought it was the VPN server issue , but after some investigation , here is what I found . It would seem that the extreme amount of data transferred , due to the increased data amount because of encryption , the typical 10/100 router does not have enough CPU speed and memory capability to move that much data down the tunnel . The third party software , open-VPN is older build and seems to have in Windows a 10Mbs built in limitation , DD-WRT has the ability but is still limited by hardware restraints.  I was interested in D-Links thoughts on the DIR-655 which I already own , 10/100/1000 capability , and whether it has or could have the capability to connect to the VPN remote servers , and provide some good transfer speed .  There is a solution which I may try , there are guys that have built their own router out of a Mini-Itx 1.8gig CPU and 2 gig of memory , using dd-wrt and some additional software to supply firewall and other features. The cost about $300 and the speed 40Mbs down and better , using the encrypted tunnel VPN. The VPNs run wide open and have the capability of over 100Mbs transfer speed  , but the amount of  connections, and home hardware restrictions work against achieving those speeds.

Awesome info. Thank you for sharing. All of that does make complete sense. It would be interesting to see how that custom router work for VPN. Ya I presume this home routers are some what limited for VPN and only carries the basics.

You might call up D-Link and ask them what model router they would recommend. There are DSR series routers however not sure if they could achieve the speeds and xfers your looking for.

Let us know if you find out anything else. Let us know what you go with. Hope something works out for you.

Given current world news , I now have more of a desire to keep my private emails and business data transfers , private . Not that my information is in need of total security but it is private and I wish to keep it that way . Also if I am out of the country it is nice to have an encrypted tunnel to my business and home here in the states.
In answer to your question on whether the home router is only good on the VPN , the simple answer is no , its has all the same functions as a commercial router even WiFi using dd-wrt pro for $20. , this also gives you support for dual layer CPUs . The homemade router should be WiFi compatible with any other router in your system but I have yet to prove that , so far I can only find testing on the VPN and plugging a commercial router and the rest of your network , into the new one .
I am also reading that Open-VPN has fixed the 10 Mbs restriction in windows .
MOBOs with sata capabilities , and VIA chipsets so far are not compatable with DD-WRT . Also DD-WRT is faster that OPEN- VPN . AMD and Atom solutions work the best , the Athlon II most successful , Intel chip sets good also , just a few of my notes ...
I dont want to overstep Forum rules so my recommendation is that if you have interest in this kind of project , you google Open-VPN , dd-wrt , m0n0wall mod and the VPN forums for further information . Youtube also has some videos on this subject .
I would love to buy a DLink router to the job but I fear the cost would be more than my research budget would allow , I am hearing prices of $800 for 480M CPU router , and I dont know if that is fast enough .
Be sure to do your homework , I am an experienced Automation Engineer , and used to working on computers at the machine level , and realize anytime you put projects together from multiple sources you are going to run into compatibility issues , that can make your life miserable . Doing your homework can eliminate a lot of those issues , already suffered and solved by others .
I would still like to have some input from DLink on this matter , as a commercial built product already has most of the bugs worked out , and would make my life much easier .

Awesome info man, thank you for sharing...

I would recommend that maybe you give D-Link sales a call and see if they have any information on this. I know that the DSR series is a business class router and does many things. Again, not sure if these home class routers can give you the speed and performance that your looking for though. Never hurts to ask.

FYI, you do know that, considering given the current world news, it seems that even if data is encrypted, it can be broke. I presume. Ya, sure is nice to know that what we did believe in is holding up to not be worth anything. Oy vay.  ::)
