Hi,

I am hoping for some help with an issue I have accessing my 826L via the internet.

My internet connection is via a Netgear DG934 DSL Modem/Router.
The WAN port of my 826L is connected to a LAN port of the Netgear.
I have given the 826L a static IP (192.168.0.254) which I have then put into the DMZ of the Netgear.
I have also created a firewall rule on the Netgear to open up port 8181 (for SharePort access).

All my devices at home connect to the D-Link via its LAN IP (192.168.1.1) and it acts as the DHCP server. It is configured to use OpenDNS and this all works correctly.

If I go to canyouseeme.org and test port 8181 it says that it is open.

However, I cannot see the D-Link from outside my network:
mydlink.com cannot see the device, and if I put http:/<my.external.ip.address>:8181 into a browser I get a 'cannot find server' message.

Any help or ideas would be gratefully received.

It's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.

Any remote access to the DLink router is dependent upon using a public WAN IP address on the WAN side of the 826L router. Having a private IP address and a double NAT isn't going to allow this kind of remote access due to the public IP address being sent to the ISP modem/router and not the 826L.

Thanks, I thought that might be the problem. I was hoping that the port forwarding would make the internal ip connection behave in the same way as an external one.

My ISP is Sky, and they lock their modems down very tightly (which is the main reason I use the extra router, so that I can use OpenDNS). I doubt if I will be able to get it into a true bridge mode.

Ya, happens with some ISPs. I suppose they don't allow BYOM? If they do, you could get your own modem and then configure things to work better for you.

You might try using a remote app like teamviewer on your remote clients to help gain access to the routers UI if needed. I use it a lot sometimes, specially if the WAN IP happens to change, I just log in to my server PC at home and get access to the router from there. Works well.
