Dir-825 redirects random pages to router login
« on: January 04, 2013, 05:24:04 PM »

Hey Guys/Gals,

Hopefully someone can help me with this rather annoying problem. I am quite happy with the router overall but everyone attached to the network has experienced this issue at one time or another so it's starting to get frustrating for me as I am the one that has to sort out their issues.

It happens randomly and could be any webpage, for instance this morning it was Facebook. Instead of bringing up Facebook it brings up the router login page. The only way to solve this issue that I have found is to clear the browsers cache. Instead of that band aid solution I'd like to try and figure out whether it is a problem that can be fixed permanently.

Router info:
Hardware Version: C1     Firmware Version: 3.00

If you need any other info please let me know and I will gladly provide it. I DID google this problem but found nothing that was helpful at all, maybe my search terms weren't right so if there is a thread about this please point me in the right direction.

Cheers!

Link>Welcome!

What region are you located?
Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
Has a Factory Reset been performed?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
Double NAT
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules.
WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
Set Time and Time Zone under Tools/Time.

What browser are you using?
Try Opera or FF? If IE 8 or 9, set compatibility mode and test again.

Heya Furry,

Thanks for your quick reply (:

I'm located in Australia.
Wireless connection to the router.
Yes, factory reset has been performed.
I have optus adsl2.
My modem is the optus supplied Netgear DG834GSP which has a built in router which I disabled when I installed the dlink.

As for your suggestions:

1. Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel. - Was already done.
2. Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual. - Was already done.
3. Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking. - Was already done.
4. Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting. - Actually already did that myself for troubleshooting this problem (:
5. Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address. - Already done.
6. Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall. - The routers firewall has not been configured. Could this be an issue? Each computer on the network has their own firewall so I did not see this as being a needed option.
7. Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules. - Here uPnP is already selected but only IPv6 Multicast streaming is enabled, not IPv4?
8. WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed - This is set to auto, not too sure what my modem supports.
9. Set Time and Time Zone under Tools/Time. - this is the strange one. I DID set this, but when I just checked it was showing as Dec 23rd 2012 and the time was wrong, it had my location right though.
10. Browsers used when having the problem are the latest IE and Chrome. - My parents are not techo friendly and it has taken me a great deal of time to get them used to the internet and I fear switching up their browsers might damage them so hopefully I can figure this problem out without having to resort to a browser switch!

I do appreciate your help so far, maybe my answers above will help narrow things down?

Cheers,

Alex (:

In fact the router is not keeping time at all, even now after I just set it and rebooted it's 7 minutes behind.

Using an NTP server?

I wasn't, now I am. However, it's impossible for me to set the daylight savings time because it only allows the option of the 1,2,3,4,5 of the month and here in Australia it started on the 7th of Oct last year and finishes on the 7th April this year. So my clock is an hour earlier than what it should be. Would time impact on the router redirecting pages though? What about the firewall and IPv4?

Try setting the time zone back one zone to compensate for the hour being off.

Is the 825 operating the PPPoE connection for your DSL? Is ALWAYS ON selected?
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall. Try turning OFF SPI and test as well.

Does this happen with a different browser?
What browser are you using?
Try Opera or FF? If IE 8 or 9, set compatibility mode and test again.

One thing I would do is to phone contact DLink support and talk to them about the time issue. The more people call in about it the more that Dlink, hopefully will fix it. These routers are still live and active, not phased out yet.

I've been advised that DLink is aware of the problem and several FW fixes are forth coming. They recommend using NTP server options. I don't think Day Light Savings is needed and it should be automatically updated by the NTP server or upon rebooting the router, it should update from the NTP server.

If you have any problems with this, please phone contact DLink directly so they know more about whats going on and will include it in the fixes.

Keep us posted.

Hi Furry,

Thank you for your perseverance, since making these changes I have not had the router login page come up once. However, there seems to be another issue that is effecting just one computer on the network. Sometimes in the morning and other times at night the browsing speed slows to almost a halt. It's the only windows xp computer on the network and this never happened before we started using the dlink router, any thoughts as to why this might be happening?

Cheers (:

IS this one PC running any firewalls or 3rd party security SW? Disable temporarily to test.
Ensure the Drivers are up to date for the network card adapter?
Try a different adapter to see if same thing happens?
Swap LAN cables between this PC and the router?
Boot the PC to safe mode with networking and test?
