I just have an old Dlink DIR-615 Wireless router. I have some problems with it and need to improve it... So, what is the best option... buy a new DIR-636L or 657 router or install the latest ddwrt firmware on the existing one?

Link>Welcome!
What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
What region are you located?
What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?

Whats wrong with the 615? If you could give some details maybe we can see if getting the ol girl going with stock FW might help.

Some people have good luck with WRT, some don't. It's kind of advanced and a bit complicated if your not into tech stuff and tinkering. I have the DIR-657, good little router for general home use and some gaming. Doesn't have any cloud features like the 636L does. I haven't had a chance to experience the 636L as of yet. My 856L is arriving soon so that will be my first Cloud router. The DIR-645 is a great router too.

Post back with some details and let see if we can get the 615 going or offer up some suggestions to try.

The hardware version is E4
Firmware is DDWRT
Region : Sri Lanka (Asia)
ISP : Lankabell, WiMax ADSL
Modem is a IDU provided by the ISP

Actually, im reading a lot of negative comments about this router. I faced some speed issues and coverage issues. But DDWRT fixed them. But, can there be any other hidden issues? Will it be enought for my home setup? The router connects to the net through a modem (IDU). I just read about dual band routers. It seems to be they are useful when the router is connecting to the net through internet. In my home, only about 1 to 2 devices connect through Wifi. Other devices use cables. So my question is, will it be pointless to have a dual band router in my setup?

You'll need to post on the WRT forums for any hidden issue with WRT. This forum is mainly for OEM Stock firmware.

Regarding dual band router, they are good to have around if you have client devices and hardware that supports 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz. If you don't have any thing that supports 5Ghz, then maybe you don't need one, however it's also nice to future proof your network in case at a later date you get a device that supports 5ghz. The DIR 8 series routers are dual band routers.
