Dlink vs WD NAS
« on: November 26, 2012, 08:56:23 PM »

Even though I was happy with the DNS 320, someone made me an offer I could not refuse. Did not make money but at the same time, I get to upgrade without any money out of pocket.

Now, debating the following options:
- DNS 320, $110 + 2TB HDs, total around $300-$320
- DNS 320L, $130 + 2TB HDs, total around $320-$350
- Western Digital My Book Live 2 TB Personal Cloud Storage Drive, $140.

If I just add one HD to the Dlink devices, price would be anywhere between $220-$250.
I realized the RAID did not come as handy as I expected, since I always keep 2-3 copies at different devices/HDs.

Now, the WD seems very attractive due to price and mobile apps, which the 320L also have.

Does anyone here had any good/bad experiences with the WD NAS devices?

Can anyone think of any pros or cons?

RAID is not a good backup option, anyway. The great avantage with a 2 drives NAS is that you can both increase the storage space and still have some redundancy, for example with 2x3Tb drives you could have a total of 4 Tb storage space, of which only 1,5 Tb is backuped on the other drive, which leaves 2,5 Tb of non backuped less sensitive data. Or if you don't care about redundancy, you could just have a total of 3 Tb.

With a single drive you don't have so much flexibility.

With or without RAID, it's still prudent to have offline/offsite backup of your important data.

It is amazing how many people look at RAID and/or external drives as backups, instead of thinking of backups as multiple copies.

Well, made the decision. Going for the WD My Book Live 2 TB Personal Cloud Storage Drive, $140.
After some researching found out it is very similar to the DNS 320. Linux OS underneath, can add something similar to fun_plug called optware and have packages for different installations such as transmition.

Sorry Dlink, loved the DNS-320! But going for the budget option this time around.
