Tips for setting up working wireless routers with optimal performance :

(D-Link DIR-655)

1. Install revision Firmware 2.10NA (Install 2.07NA if you use Guest Access Point)
2. Hard reset using button in the back.
3. Internet > Setup > Manual Uncheck Advanced DNS service.
4. Make sure unicasting is checked.
5. Use a different DNS. (I use GoogleDNS, use namebench if you want better speeds though!) 8.8.8.8/8.8.4.4 as primary and secondary.
6. Advanced > QOS Engine > Disable or uncheck Traffic Shaping
7. Advanced > Firewall > UDP Endpoint Filtering = Endpoint Independant / TCP Endpoint Filtering = Endpoint Independant
8. This one is for DHCP failures. Spent months figuring this out, boy did I feel stupid.

First off for #8, go to Tools > Time > set Time Zone to YOUR current TIME ZONE. Google and find out if you're in daylights savings or not if you're like me and don't really pay attention.
Automatic Time Configuration > Enable NTP Server  either server will work. Save, and reboot. BAM.

This fixes problems with the router dropping the lease, because your ISP is sending one with the correct date which is incorrect on your end.

Note : Almost all firmwares will be spammed by some sort of stupid thing in the log file. As long as your internet connection stays on all the time, and you don't notice a degradation of signal or speed, you're good to go!

Thanks for posting and sharing your experiences.

It is recommended when updating FW, to do a factory reset both before and after when the FW update file has been sent and the router reboots to ready.

ISP DNS should work well for most users however NameBench can possibly find other DNS alternatives.
