Possible To Remote Backup To/From DNS-323?
« on: December 15, 2012, 04:00:33 PM »

I currently have a DNS 323 (firmware 1.09) running 2x2GB drives (WD20EARS-00MVWB0) in a non-RAID fashion.

One side serves as a backup for my main computer and is backed up on an occasional basis, the other side is storage of media files and is not backed up at this time.

I'm thinking of purchasing another DNS-323 (used) and loading two similar-sized drives and, after an initial backup locally, keeping the second unit at an off-site location (in-laws) and setting up a scheduled incremental backup.

I was thinking that if it would work, I could utilise a dynamic DNS service and some domain names I already own and, in combination with a static IP address from the router at both locations, have the update feed directly to the remote DNS-323.

My question is...would this sort of setup work?  Are there options available?

Thanks for your input.

Theoretically - yes - the DNS-323 firmware includes a scheduled download utility which can be used with an ftp server, so if you set up the first DNS-323 for remote access via ftp, you can then set the second DNS-323 to access it as scheduled to do the backup.

RAID1 is for disk redundancy - NOT data backup - don't confuse the two.
