Can the DSL-2640B modem/router combo be configured to work properly with all functions on a DHCP based service like Centurylink?  I can get it to access the internet in bridged mode using VPI/VCI 8/35 but the wireless doesn't want to work this way.  I've had this modem for several years and haven't needed or messed with the wireless until now. For what it's worth, the PC is an old 2004 Dell desktop, running windows XP SP2, I've tried to access the wireless via 2 different laptops and a tablet with no success. They say the signal strength is excellent, just never obtain an IP.

When bridge mode is used on the Modem/Router, it effectively cuts off the board DHCP services and possible the WiFi as well. Bridging is meant for use with external routers like DLinks DIR/DGL series routers. Bridging DSL mode is preferred as the external routers can have better features and options.
ISP Service>DSL modem(bridged)>DIR/DGL series router with WiFi><wired and wireless devices connected to external router.

If you were to leave the DSL modem un-bridge, you could use it has you main host router and WiFi should be accessible. The addition of adding or upgrading WiFi could be done by adding a DLink DAP model device at a later date for using 2.4Ghz/5ghz radios for faster connections. If this was done, the onboard Wifi on the DSL Modem should be disabled.

Some suggestions for you.
ISP should be able to help you set up and configure the DSL modem for use on there system. Make sure the phone lines are in good condition, signal is good going into the modem and phone lines are set up and filtered correctly.
