Can't get Windows 8 to see shares
« on: December 10, 2012, 07:22:18 PM »

Folks,

Just got a new computer with Win 8 on it and had a heck of a time getting it to see my WD NAS.  I finally had to set the Workgroup to the same Homegroup as my wife's Win 7 machine (to see THAT) and then set the WD NAS to use HOMEGROUP as the workgroup, if that makes sense.

Anyway, now I can't write to the DNS320, even though I've set the workgroup to HOMEGROUP as well.  I can see it under Computer, and read the files there, but can't write or delete any files there and it doesn't show up under Network (this, incidentally, was the exact problem I had with the Western Digital NAS until I set the workgroup there to HOMEGROUP, but it's not working for me with the D-Link unit).  Anyone have a clue as to what I can try next?

Please note I am not being facetious here but we are telling all our clients that are having problems with win8 to go back to win7 until microsoft sort out the problems with their new OS.  Other than that, all I can think of is to look at how the SMB permissions are setup - sorry.

Well, I could understand it if the Windows 8 computer had NEVER seen either of my two D-Link NAS -- but perhaps I didn't make it clear.  All was working well until I changed the Workgroup name to match the Homegroup (which I had to do to get my Windows 7 machine to work properly, and so that my WD NAS would work).  After that the D-link units stopped working correctly.

So Windows 8 can't really be the problem, right?  Because if it was, it wouldn't have worked in the first place.  Somehow the issue is that changing the Workgroup name in the D-link settings stopped everything from working.  Is it not possible to use a workgroup name other than "workgroup"?

I'm going to try rebooting things in a different order because I've read elsewhere that the D-link units may be sensitive to how they are started up (they never have been in the past, but it's worth a try).

Ah -- it turned out that was *exactly* the fix.

Booting up the D-Link NAS unit first and then booting my computers up enabled them to see it just fine (and I didn't lose my WD NAS, thank goodness).

Now, the post about saying that D-Link units had issues with not being the first to boot up was an old one and not related to Win 8, (IIRC it had something to do with "master browser", whatever the heck that is).  So I wouldn't be so quick to blame a new OS in these circumstances (I never did get around to seeing if my Win 7 machines would see the D-Link but my hunch is they would haven't either).

In any case, mischief managed.
