Very weak signal
« on: December 09, 2012, 07:36:57 PM »

Received my replacement router and it has very weak signal upstairs and outside on my patio. I am very knowledgeable with routers and have tested each antenna separately and all have different strengths of signal output. While viewing the router from the front the right antenna is the strongest with an RSSI of -45 the center with -64 and the left with -58 all tested with inSSIDer. The center being the weakest again. Anywhere on my first floor I get between 100-90% signal which is great. But upstairs and outside I'm getting 60% signal and streaming HD content to the PS3 is horrible. Video takes for ever to load and plays and buffers every 5 seconds. I don't see how D-Link states this router is for large homes. There are many people complaining of weak signal with this router. Maybe it needs stronger radios with a better TX power output and larger antennas. After much research about D-Link routers it seems many of their routers have weak signal. Hopefully a firmware release will increase the power output.

How big is your home?
If you have more devices accessing the router on the upper floor than the 1st floor, then it's recommended to place ian AP up there. Many things can effect WiFi and performance.

Distance and placement is crucial to good operation and coverage. Have a larger home, might just mean that you might need an additional AP to help with coverage, say one down stairs and one up stairs. I've got a 5000sq ft home going online next year, I hope, and will have 3 minimum APs. Normally I run 3 APs in a 2300sq ft home when I'm not testing a single router by itself. I personally don't stream video over Wifi unless it's something like youtube or minor things like that. Netflix and files from my server are streamed via LAN cable only.

I would consider checking your distances from devices to the 655. If there more then say 15-20ft, I would consider getting into an additional AP. Can run on the same SSID and such, just needs to be on a different channel. They work well.

This router just has weak wireless and we have to accept it. No way should this router say for a large home. More like a small apartment. I read some where that v2.03NA has the best wireless performance for this router. Any truth to that?

Just sold this router for $45.00. May look into getting another high end D-Link router. Which would you recommend?
