DIR 815 and Sony HDTV
« on: December 13, 2012, 05:13:03 PM »

Hi all.

I am having trouble configuring my DIR 815 with my new Bravia KDL50EX645 TV.  The TV manual recommends a router capable of working on the 5 GHz band.

When I name the 2 bands different SSID's, the TV only finds the 2.4 GHz band.
When I use the same SSID for both the 2,4 and the 5GHz bands, the TV only connects to what appears to be the 2,4 GHz band, but occasionally, it will actually stream video very fluidly and in Hi-def.   I could swear that it is working on the 5 GHz band.

This performance, unfortunately is very intermittent. More than 1/2 the time, it seems to be on the lower frequency band.

How can I get the TV to see and lock onto the 5 GHz band?

I have tried the above with about all levels of security and no difference.

I'd appreciate any help on this---I've been pulling my hair out all week on this - wait, I don't have any...

Link>Welcome!
What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
What region are you located?

Link>Wireless Installation Considerations
What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz and single mode N on 5Ghz?

What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.

SSIDs need to be different between each radio.

What security mode is supported by the TV? Will it support WPA or WPA2? TPIK?

Try connecting the TV after you disable WiFi security as a quick test.

The TV seems to support WPA2 - PSK (AES).

It is currently set up that way.  It has been working since I tried your suggestions from last night, although I set the 2.4 GHz band wireless mode to mixed (n/g/b) because mixed g/n wasn't available.  I had as options n only, mixed g & b and mixed n/g/b.

I set up the 5 GHz mode to n only.

Funny thing is that the SSID for the 5 GHz band still does not show up on the TV, but the TV is clearly working at lightening speed, streaming Netflix (in what looks like HD) after I choose the 2.4  GHz SSID.

My laptop immediately found both bands, by the way.  Setting it to 5 GHz, I was able to stream 1080i video from the laptop to the TV.

Thank you a ton.

Uh-oh.

It's now back to being highly random.  I've found that turning the router off for about 10 seconds, waiting 1 minute, then turning on the TV and accessing Netflix, it's OK.

Would you happen to have any other suggestions?

Should I regularly turn off or reset the router?

BTW, the TV manual recommends a 5GHz capable router, so I assume the TV supports it.

I assume you mean a personal online message (sorry, not familiar with all the online terms).

What user ID and PW are you referring to?

Anything to do with teamviewer?

I am available the 25th between 9:00 AM and 1:00 PM Eastern standard time (Montreal), but that's Xmas day!  Also the 26th between 9 AM and 1PM and between 7pm and 11pm.

After much research, here is the deal.  The Sony TV I have purchased (in the EX 64 series) does not support the 5 GHz band, even though the TV's selling point is that it has BUILT-IN WI-FI, and the manual mentions the need for a 5GHz capable router.

The Wi-Fi certificate for this product and many other Sony's in that price range (1000$) clearly shows that it has only been certified in the 2.4 GHz band.

Once I purchased the $90 Sony USB wi-fi dongle, all networks are visible, including the 5 GHz one.

Set it up, and the HD streaming is spectacular.  Thanks SONY for misleading me.

Awesome HDTV, etc, but why the smoke and mirrors?

Thanks for all the help Furrynuts, and again, Happy New Year.

I bit the bullet and connected my Sony 60" via 100bT cable to my DIR-825.

BTW, when I phone ordered my Sony from Sears, I said "Does it include the WiFi stick?" they said "Yes".  It arrived without. Eventually Sears gave me a credit and I used an ethernet cable instead.

Thats called marketing for ya. LOL. They'll say anything to get people to buy something. Glad you found the adapter that works and it's working well for ya.

Enjoy.
