I put in the firmware upgrade and haven't had any problems since then. That seems to have fixed the problem.

just an fyi for those stumbling onto this thread - I've had a lot of trouble with this router too. The specific failure mode was that the computers could connect to the router but not get an IP address. I'd see these two messages in the log:

A STA is rejected by 802.1x daemon - ....
  and
Authentication failled! (4-2: MIC error) ....

   Sadly, there's some voodoo involved in the 'fix'.  However, the other steps mentioned in this and another thread on this site helped:
 Upgrade the router firmware to 1.10
 Set the channels to single-G
 Turn off the QOS engine
  Turn off short-GI
  Use the WPA-personal with broadcast on

These changes made most of my devices connect and remain connected for a long time. I don't know if some of these are less important than others and I've wasted enough time messing with it so that I won't experiment any more to find out.
  Other voodoo steps:
   I found that a few computers which couldn't connect using DHCP would connect fine if I assigned them an arbitrary address outside the DHCP-reserved range. I didn't bother to tell the router about them, since I have few enough devices that conflicts aren't an issue.
  I found that one laptop needed beating about the head. After it worked fine for about a week, it lost the ability to connect, with the router log showing the above messages. I turned off its radio, forgot the network, and shut it down. After rebooting, turning on the radio and re-establishing the network with a fixed IP, it started working again. I'd tried each of the above steps without good result; only when I did all three together (forget as much as possible; power off; restart and re-establish settings) did it fire up.
  'Course, this is voodoo - for all I know it would have fixed itself, or a neighbor turned off his router, or...
rhetorical question: how do most normal, non-engineer-type people, deal with this nonsense??? Just think if the computers on your car engine were this fussy, and your car would every once in a while decide to leave you stranded till you fussed with it.

Good info. Be aware that some wifi issues are causes by external interferences like other neighboring WiFi routers.

Not sure if anyone will read this but I, too, had difficulties.  Purchased the DIR-651 from buy.com to replace my old Belkin that would lock-up once a day.  Always resetting it made accessing the internet very frustrating. 

Figured D-Link would be better.  Put the CD in and followed the wizard.  From the start, all my wireless devices (ipods, ipads, android phones) would try to connect but would ultimately drop off.  After troubleshooting, I would not be able to access the router through a wired PC (Win7).  Wired PC's would also hang and not connect to the internet.  I'd have to unplug the router and plug back in.  Checking the IP's of the wireless devices, non were correct.  Setting them to static would help only for a short time. 

Tried some of the steps from FurryNutz but didn't really solve anything.  I believe in one of the posts, FurryNutz or someone, said to re-run setup.  I re-ran the internet setup and made sure my cable provider was selected; I think the wizard didn't select the correct one the first time (maybe my fault).  After setup completed, wireless devices seemed to authenticate via DHCP and have the correct IP's.  Checked this AM and all still looks OK (reran last night).  Maybe re-running setup may help someone else.

Will update if I run into more issues.

What ISP Modem make and model do you have?

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only or Disable IPv6 options under Setup/IPv6.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules.
WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP server feature. Tools/Time.

Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?

  Thanks for the reply.  Checked last night when I went home and did lose connection for all wireless.  All my notes are at home and I will check tonight.

  I have a  Motorola Surfboard modem (will get model # later) direct to the DIR-651.  I have Cablevision (Optimum Online) ISP.  I'm East Coast time (NJ).  Also, have to reset time to PC since it's never correct on router.  I did run inSSIDer and did see a few networks in my area but they shouldn't interfere.  When my wireless is not working, all devices try to connect to a 169.XXX IP.  not sure if that is one of the other networks however, my signal is pretty strong.  I normally use Chrome to log in but when the 651 hiccups badly, I can't access with IE8 either.  I will go an try the below when I get home.  As of this AM, I had wireless connection through an ipad and my android phone.  Wired PC worked as well.

UPDATE:

Without doing too much, the router seems to work.  Updated firmware to 1.11NA.  Most settings on your checklist are already set.  I did enable NTP.  Most times looking at the connection  up status, it's only connected for an hour or so but I haven't noticed disruptions in wireless.  I check ipads and android phones for wifi and it's there.  Firmware update may have helped.  Will keep you posted.
