Author Topic: Router rebooting itself ~5 times/day. Will drop wireless connection too, not LAN  (Read 13385 times)

I need some help with this router - many thanks in advance if you can solve these issues. So the router will reboot itself ~5 times/day. At other times, I will come home to the router with the green power light and internet light solid, but the wireless light is off. Wired LAN connections will work and I will be still be able to connect to the internet, but wireless doesn't work. This is only remedied by rebooting the router.

I tried the DD-WRT firmware hoping it would solve this issue. It rebooted slightly less often, but I reverted back to stock firmware because it still didn't solve the issue completely, and that I would be more clueless in their community.

Link>Welcome!
What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
- I1
Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
- 9.02NA
What region are you located?
- Toronto, Canada

Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
- Wirelessly
Has a Factory Reset been performed?
- Yes, used the emergency room to re-flash the 9.02NA firmware, then hard resetted.

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
- Cable
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
- Stand alone
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
- Thompson Modem - DCM-425
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
Double NAT
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.

- my IP address is not a 192.168.0.# address under device info

What wireless modes are you using?
- Mixed 802.11n, 802.11g and 802.11b
Are you using the WiFi at all? I might turn it off if your not as a test.
- how do I work around this?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
- tried this, still reboots itself
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.
- AUTO (WPA or WPA2) - PSK
What wireless devices do you have connected?
 - 1 desktop, 2 laptops, 1 iPhone, 1 android phone, 1 android tablet
it should be noted at times that the desktop notifies me that two devices have the same IP address
Any cordless house phones?
- no
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.
- yes, one on channel 1, mine on channel 6, and another on channel 11. I live in a condo, sometimes there are more broadcasting

If you live in a condo and there are other WiFi routers near by, I would bet that the 2.4Ghz radio maybe congested and the 615 is stopped due to the possible interferences on the channel. You sure there are no others using the same channel?

Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.

You can try to lower the power out put of the 615 under Advanced/Adv Wireless from HIGH to Medium or LOW and test.

Turn OFF the WiFi radio and test to see if the router reboots automatically with a wired PC connected to it. Still happen?

You might want to think about getting a 5Ghz adapter and a 5Ghz AP installed as a add-on and see if that will help you if there seems to be a lot going on 2.4Ghz in your area.

Thanks for the response; I wasn't aware that radio congestion could cause a router to reboot.

Right now I'm trying mixed G and N, Auto 20/40Mhz, and low output. I'll let you know if that works! Thanks again.

So I tried a bunch of different combination settings on the router to no avail =/.

At first I tried Single mode G, then mixed G and B on 20MHz, then mixed G and N on 20MHz, all having similar rates of router reboots.

Trying mixed on a single channel (8) to see if that works.

I recommend that you disable the WiFi radio as a test and then see if the router reboots. If it does not, then you have a wireless problem. Seems like your area is congested with 2,4Ghz WiFi. You may want to get a 5Ghz AP and a 5Ghz adapter.

Would it be a fair statement to say that a better router would be less susceptible to 2.4Ghz WiFi congestion, or would routers of all builds/prices be affected in a similar manner. I used to have a Bell modem/router which had the same issues, so I'm wondering if investing in a better router would net me the same results.

Thanks in advance.

You may want to get into a 5Ghz AP and 5Ghz wireless adapters.

I finally got around to using a wired connection only on the DIR-615 with wireless turned off. It STILL reboots.

Ok so we can rule out WiFi as a culprit.

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.

Is there any IPv6 settings on this model router? If there is, disable them or set for Local Connection only.
Disable any IPv6 on the PC(s) that your working with under the network settings for each PC.

Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules.

WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP server feature. Tools/Time.

Swap out cables between ISP modem, Router and PC.

Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask.
