Dyn DNS not working after upgrade to 1.24EU
« on: October 29, 2013, 12:40:24 PM »

Der members,
I am hoping that someone has some good input to me. I have a DIR-855 that I have been using with 1.12EU firmware for some time. I also have a name registered at dlinkddns.com that has served me well. However, after the update I cannot get the router to update my ip address automatically anymore. I make sure that all the information is entered correctly and save. It starts connecting but ends up in disconnected very soon. Before upgrade I exported a config file that I loaded but unfortunately many things were wrong so I had to update manually in many cases. I cannot be totally sure that I got all the definitions correct so I am hoping that someone will point me to something I have missed. I have tried to read about this issue but I haven't found anything I can use.
Thanks,  Arne

Link>Welcome!

  • Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
  • Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates then set up from scratch? Follow this for doing FW updates: FW Update Process

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
  • Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values
  • For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.

Router and Wired Configurations
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.
  • Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options, Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
  • Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual or under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP.
  • Enable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) under Setup/Internet/Manual.
  • Turn OFF DNS Relay under Setup/Networking. Link>Finding Faster DNS Addresses using Name Bench
  • Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
  • Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
  • If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only or Disable IPv6 options under Setup/IPv6.
  • Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall. Enable or Disable SPI to test.
  • Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules. Enable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming for routers that have a Media Server option. Disable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming if IPv6 or Media Server is not being used.
  • Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
  • WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
  • Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP Server feature. Tools/Time.

Thanks for the feedback.
Clearly I did not follow these instructions since the update did not tell me to look for any instructions. I used a wired pc for the update with internet explorer. I did not turn off all other devices (camera, storage, server etc). I did not reset to factory default. However, I upgraded since I had experienced problems with my router (disconnecting/hanging when many devices are active) and I had hoped that the upgrade from 1.12EU to 1.24EU would assist me. So the question is now - after not doing everything correct the first time what do I do now? Do I reset and upgrade again or maybe only reset. In any case I would say that almost everything else seems to work fine right now but I wont know for sure until I've used it for a while.
Thanks,  Arne

Try a factory reset then set up the router from scratch and see.

Let us know if you and post about any of the suggestions and answer any of the questions presented. Hope we can be of help.

Thanks for the input.
I reseted the router to factory default (Tools/System) and after that I manually entered the required setup information. Now everything seems to be working and from the short time I have had it up it seems that quality has improved. Maybe it is worthwhile to reset the router now and then since I guess some garbage could reside in buffers and memory? I will keep you posted if I run into any problems but right now everything looks fine.
