Link speed issue when using Motorola SB6141 cable modem

Hello,

when I connect my DIR-655 to the Motorola SB6141 cable modem I notice that the link speed LED on the cable modem never glows blue indicating a gigabit connection, it only glows amber indicating a lower negotiated speed.  I am using a Cat6 cable between the two devices and have also tried a Cat5e cable.

When I try and force the WAN port speed to 1000Mpbs in the router interface the cable modem link speed will not light at all with no connectivity. Only resetting to Auto WAN port speed restores functionality albeit at the lower negotiated speed setting.

I'm running the DIR-655 rev B1 at 2.03NA firmware level.

I did connect the modem directly to my PC that uses an Intel Gigabit ethernet card and still had the lower connection indication (Amber) so it seems that the modem might be faulty.

Does anyone else have the same router and the SB6141 and is noticing this issue?

Might be a bad modem. I have the SB 6120, 21 and 80, all 3 connect at Gb speeds on the 655. I would get a new 6141 or test the 655 with a different modem if you can to make sure the WAN port is good on the 655. I presume it is if you've swapped cables and check with a direct connection to the modem.

Well I tried everything I could think of.  Resetting the router to defaults, different ethernet cable, connecting to Gigabit card on PC.  No luck.

At one point though it did come up all blue and I figured everything all of a sudden resolved itself but then as soon as I opened the browser and went to a web site it reverted back to amber  :(

Have a support email to Motorola and am also getting another 6141 unit to test out.

Is there a way I can test the DIR-655 WAN port for correct Gigabit functionality without buying a new modem?

Test at a different location, friend, family or neighbors place?

Well first, "glowing blue" just means it has a gigabit connection rate, which unless your ISP is google, you don't need. No point of having a 1000Mb connection rate if your speed is only 30Mb or the like. From the sound of it, the firmware downloaded by your ISP may even be forcing a 100Mbps.

Second, if its happening with a NIC, then you have isolated it as a non router issue. I would contact Motorola if you want to troubleshoot it, but really its a non problem. Think you may be a little too focused on the blue lights. Heh

Last, if you want to test the WAN port on the router, just connect the Gigabit NIC to the DIR-655 WAN port, make sure both are on 1000Mbps and reboot the modem. Even though it won't give you a usable connection, it should still form a physical 1000Mbps connection.
