Using drive from 323 in Windows 7 pc
« on: March 09, 2013, 10:08:06 PM »

One of my drives failed in my DNS-323 and I want to try and recover some of the files from it so I popped it into my new Windows 7 PC. It reads the drive but I can only see it if I go into the control panel, it is not listed with the C, D or E drives like it should.

So I took out the drive that is still working fine in my DNS 323 and put that in the PC, it has the same issue.

Is there some way for me to access these drive on Windows 7 without them being in the 323 network device?

Since the drives are formatted with the linux Ext2/3 file system that windows knows nothing about there is no way you are going to read anything from them unless you have an installable file system (IFS) or a program that can read the file system.

If you install the drives in your computer then you need an IFS and I'm not sure there is one available for win 7, or you are likely to have problems as windows tries to read the disk at boot.

A much safer way is to use a USB/SATA caddy or adapter with a program that can read Ext2/3 file system.  That way you might get something from your failed drive depending on how it failed and how it was setup in the NAS.  I also hope you didn't try too hard to read anything off your good drive because if you did then you may have caused problems there as well.

BTW if your drives were setup as Raid 0 then there is no hope of recovering anything from the broken array.

Please see the following sticky post for the names of several software products that will allow you to physically install DNS-323 HDDs on your Windows PC for the purposes of extracting data: DNS-323 - Data Recovery (Windows PCs)
