Author Topic: Can I connect a USB drive to DIR-645 to stream local videos to ROKU with PC off?  (Read 4221 times)

This is my first post to hopefully find an answer for a basic media center scenario using the D-Link DIR-645 router, a ROKU XS and an external USB drive.

Is it possible to access/stream videos from an external USB hard drive connected to the DIR-645 router  playing through the ROKU XS? My goal here, is to find a way to connect a storage device to the router, so that it is available and detectable by the ROKU, to stream videos (tv shows and movies) without having to leave my PC on. I guess I am trying to find a cheaper solution to building an HTPC, and not looking to get a full NAS, just possibly a single affordable drive that can connect to the network, and not require the PC to be on.

The ROKU will connect directly to the router via Ethernet, and directly to the TV via HDMI. The router would then have an external hard drive connected to its USB port, but I think it might be important to note that it's a D-Link router, which might require the Shareport software to connect... this I am not sure about, and I am worried that D-Link's Shareport utility might cause issues with seeing a drive connected to the router. I have read that I might be able to map this drive without Shareport, but will the ROKU see it?

If anyone has any suggestions for how to have an external USB hard drive connected to the DIR-645 router to stream to the ROKU without having to leave a PC on, I would be really interested in hearing them. Keep in mind I am trying to keep things simple, but willing to spend a little if it gets me a solution.

Thanks in advance!

I believe page 85 of the User Manual is what your needing for your streaming needs.
