Settings not saved nor kept?
« on: May 11, 2009, 07:39:07 PM »

Hello everyone,

My 323 was working well and smoothly for the (nearly) last two years. But now, I do have a strange/weird problem. So if you don't mind, please, give me any suggestion.

My DNS went from FW 1.03 to 1.06. The DNS was ON between 85 to 90% of the time.

Couple of weeks ago, we moved to a new place, and thus, the DNS has to be turned off for a while (one or two weeks). Once I got time, I set back all my system with the routers, switch and so on... And at last the DNS. I found little bit weird that the ON led was blinking longer than usual, but then stopped blinking and was plain blue. Then I forgot about this incident. And I didn't access the DNS for a while because I use it mainly as a backup and file storage, and I have something else to do for a (big) while.

Couple of days ago, I checked my backup program (Cobian), which has been running smoothly for the last two years, and I saw that Cobian was not able to save any backup... Argh! So I first thought about a hard disk problem... I cursed Seagate, and looked into that direction for a while (bad HDD firmware, etc.). But I have to admit that the HDD is not the guilty one. The network devices and cable were checked too... It is an internal problem to the DNS =(

Later I checked the DNS (on the web interface), and I didn't find it at the usual IP (x.x.2.60). I succeeded to find it back thanks to THE DUDE, and the IP was x.x.2.100... Weird... Hum... Password not working any more... I tried the default one, it worked, then I looked around: all the settings are back to the factory default!

I set everything back, and after one operation, I have to restart the DNS for the change to take effect... Still the browser was now looking at x.x.2.60, as expected, but didn't find a thing. Once again, I tried x.x.2.100 and find it back with NO settings.

Now my question: where is the damn problem: the Flash memory? The battery or something else? Am I good to throw it away?

I thank you in advance for any thing.

The Firmware now is a vanilla 1.07 from D-Link.

Bye

You seem to be referring to the LAN settings here - one question ...

Are you clicking on the "save settings" button or one of the "apply" buttons?

On a couple of occasions I have reset my unit to default (typically after a firmware upgrade) and experienced the problem you describe, only to realise that I have been trying to save the settings using the "apply" button at the bottom of the screen (which is for the jumbo frame only) rather than the "save settings" button near the top.

Hi Fordem,

Well, I have been got once by the apply button. Now, I press for every change done, the "Save Settings" button... And if I shut it down, I can start all the settings again.

The example given indeed was for LAN, but it could be applied for all tabs... That's why I am wondering if it is possible that the flash memory went south... Pity we don't have any log on the DNS.

I have the same problem, my thread is here:

http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=5341.0

My settings are saved and long as the unit is running.
Any reboot of the unit will have everything go back to default.

There's a "coin cell" battery in there - a CR2032 I believe - those with out of warranty units might like to try replacing that.

If I recall correctly, the back panel is secured by four screws under rubber plugs, and once that is removed, there are four more screws after which the guts slide out.

Yep I will try that but I should admit that I am a little bit surprised: after two years of nearly 80-90% turned on, the battery ran out? And with a restart the settings are lost? What about the flash memory (err... is there any Flash memory? I don't know anymore ;) ).

Please let me know if replacing the battery solved the issue.
Thank you.

If you are within warrant I would recommend trying it from another PC first and if you still seeing this behavior contacting technical support via telephone for a replacement.

I think I replied in another thread with the same problem: by reverting to the default settings and/or doing a reset of them, it has worked, so no need to change the battery.

Of course, I have no explanations why the problem occurs :(

But as ECF suggested, if the DNS is under warranty, better to use this option.
