Setting up the device
« on: March 17, 2013, 11:15:03 AM »

Hi,

I just ordered a DNS-320 to make the content of my 2 hard drives available on my network. As I'm preparing to set it up, I just want to make sure of a few things to avoid any mistake:

Am I right to assume that, out of the box, once I insert my two hard drives (which both contain data) and turn on the device, they will both be mounted separately (as distinct volumes)?

I just want to be sure that it won't either put them in RAID mode (and one disc will clone over the other) or first format them if I miss doing something.

Thanks!

For a start make sure you have a full working backup of your data because when you put the drives in the unit it will want to format them with the linux Ext2/3 file system.

If they are already formatted Ext2/3 then you might get away with using them as they are - but then you might not.  If they are formatted with any windows file system then the unit will not be able to read them and it will require you to format them to be of any use.

Make sure you have a backup then it will not matter if the unit formats them.

Damn, I hadn't noticed that it's not NTFS-compatible. Looks like this isn't the unit I need then, since I want to keep these discs as they are...

Thanks for the tip!

I'm not sure you will find a NAS that uses the windows file system.  All of those we recommend to clients have linux as their operating system.

As your data appears to be very important to you and you don't appear to have it backed up and you must keep those disks as they are then I would recommend that you get two more disks for the DNS-320 and transfer your data to them in the NAS.  You then have the required backup of your data.
