ACK requests every 40s?
« on: March 15, 2013, 04:19:10 PM »

Hello,

I've been in touch with Dlink numerous times about the latency issues i'm experiencing with their router.
We have ruled out so many things, our internet is fast, 50down/10up.
We've pinged the router during normal latency and horrible latency- consistent ping.
We've set all IP's to static to make sure their was no IP conflicts happening.
I've done all of Dlink's trouble shooting steps and finally got a new router from them...same issue.
I DO notice however, that in the logs, it is sending ACK requests every 40 seconds to 1 IP address for hours. It also says next to it "Lease Time (-1)"
I notice this when we lag terribly in our online video games, i alt-tab and check the logs.
If that device it powered off, the router starts to ACK a different IP every 40 or so seconds for hours and hours. Usually it's phones, but now it's a laptop that's doing it. We can only play wireless-ly because we live in an apartment. On top of that, this router was meant for wireless (which is why we bought it.)
We're unable to play any game without interruption and having to power cycle the router. Any help would be great. Thanks in advance.

Link>Welcome!
What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
What region are you located?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?

Are these requests being sent to one of the private IP addresses or to a WAN IP address?
Can you post small text sample of the logs here?

If you perform a factory reset on the router, with the router disconnected from the ISP modem and ALL other devices accept for one LAN wired PC, do you see this same ACK being listed?

Hardware Version: A1
Firmware Version: 1.03
Region: Pennsylvania, USA
ISP: Comcast (Cabled)
Modem Mfr. Arris
Model Number: TM822G/CT

It's sending the ACK to private IP addresses.
I have not tried the factory reset yet, figured a new router would fix the problem.

SAMPLE:
http://gyazo.com/9ec07780de9339695370ec43f1b97c49

The IP that it is ACKing is my phone, the "red" parts are the MAC address of my phone. Same MAC in all red.

"I have not tried the factory reset yet, figured a new router would fix the problem."
Has this been happening before you got the 645 router?

Is this the only device, the cell phone that you notice this? Is the cell phone set up with a reserved IP address on the router?

If you do the factory reset, do it with out the router being connected to the router and turn off ALL devices accept 1 wired PC. Turn OFF the cell phone as well. See if the PC is doing the same thing. If not, then turn ON the cell phone and watch the logs again. I'm wondering if the cell phone is the culprit.
What is the Mfr and model of this phone?

Do you have any phone service thru this ISP modem as well or is it only for internet?
We've seen some issues with Arris modems:

This is my second 645. The first did it as well. My old Linksys router did not.

This is NOT the only device. If i turn off the phone, the router will send ACK requests to another device. Last night it was a laptop.

Yes, we have the triple play (internet, tv, home phone.)
I do not think that it has a built in router in the Modem.

If i perform the factory reset of the router, i need it disconnected from everything except for the wall and 1 PC? And would i upgrade the firmware or leave it?

Just factory reset with just 1 LAN wired PC connected. Leave it diconnected from the ISP modem and turn OFF ALL other devices. One thing you can do if you want to try, download the latest FW version file from the main DLink web site before going off line. Factory reset the router, re-upload the FW .bin file using IE only. After it resets, do ONE more factory reset. Still disconnected from the ISP modem, set up the router using the 1 wired LAN pc using IE. Review the logs and see what if the ACKs are happening. I'll give my 645 a look see to see if I'm seeing the same thing.

Just tested my Mac Book Pro and iPhone 4S with my 645, I only got 2 ACKs for the Mac Book Pro 1 for the iPhone. I waited several minutes while refreshing the log page to see if any others appeared, I didn't see any. Seemed stable. This test was with the 645 not connected to any ISP modem and just using the 2 client devices. v1.03 is loaded on my 645.

And this happens with any devices connected, wired and wireless?

Yes, please do a factory reset, with the router disconnected from the ISP Modem and connect up one wired PC and test. Don't reload any saved configuration from file, just factory reset and open the routers web page and look at the logs...should only be about 2 pages of logs after it's ready and by the time you review the logs.

Let us know....
