Extend my wireless and wired range
« on: May 05, 2009, 01:09:39 AM »

Hope this makes some sense, i have a DIR-655 in my office connect to my cable modem. I use both the wired and wireless ports on this.

I need to further my wireless and wired coverage to other parts of the building, i have run a cable from one of the ports on the back of the DIR-655 to another room which is where i need more wired and wireless coverage.

Is there a product that will do this? Will the DAP-1522 work?

Any help appreciated,

Thanks

Yes.

Just set up the DAP with the same SSID & security as your 655 and your devices will be able to hop seamlessly between the two APs.

Stay away from DAP, its terrible.

Get another 655 and use it as AP instead.

Why ?
It is working fine here and only the range is not as good as with DIR-655 because of the internal antennas.
But it is enough to cover on large room and devices behind 1 brick wall.

I have used DAP1522 to extend the range from DIR655, but in the end, my PC with DWA 552 gets a better signal from 655 then it does from dap1522.

My setup was:

DIR-655--->DHP-300 |2 walls|DHP-300--->DAP-1522 as AP (FW 1.20EU)

In the room between the walls, the signal of the DIR is stronger but on its side of the wall the DAP is connecting 2 computers with DWA-140/142 very stable.
Only the powerline limits connection to my network to about 50 mbps (6,5 MB/s).
Connected via LAN to the DIR I got up to 8 MB/s.

So far it works very well with DIR-655. Also in bridge mode there are no problems to stay connected more than 24 hours when disabling power management of connected LAN computers and QoS in DAP.

From my side I can recommend the DAP as additional AP or Bridge with "limited" range  ;D

You have spent twice as much as what one DIR655 can do.

But  jgrove, ran a wire to a location where he wants additional coverage. Thus DIR655 would get the job done much better.

I don't want to say, the DAP is the only solution  :)

DAP 1522:
Can also act as wireless bridge to add additional wired clients if not longer needed as AP
Can add 5 GHz band if needed
Works with DIR-825/855 (5GHz) if upgrade planned

DIR-655:
Has better range
Can be used as router if the primary router fails

Prices are almost the same in Europe (about 90€)
Forget my powerline connection, it is only for my special needs.

Thanks for all your comments, the DIR-655 and DAP-1522 and 1353 are pounds 100 UK Pounds, so by comparison they are expensive.

While i know this is a D-Link forum i thought i would share what i have done.

My DIR-655 is in my office, its has wired and wireless connections, a wire from this router goes around my house to my living room, where i wanted the new connections to be available. I went to a local store (Argos) and bought a Buffalo WHR-G300N Access Point and Bridge for 38 UK Pounds. It was a long shot as i didnt think it would work. After setting the Buffalo's IP to the same as the existing network and providing it with the gateway ip (DIR-655) is was up and running.

Now i haven't extended my wireless range, just created a new wireless access point, so i have 2 wireless points in my house with different SSID's. The good thing about this is that i can also use the wired ports on the back of the Buffalo unit as well.

Many thanks for your help and comments, hope my information is helpful to someone,

Cheers

KGB7 makes a good point about using a 2nd DIR-655 as an AP instead of as a router.  If they cost nearly the same and if I honestly had a choice between the DAP and DIR, I'd get the DIR myself.  The only reason I'd get the DAP instead would be if i was in a place where I couldn't run a wire.  Fortunately, you already have one run to the destination.
