does anyone know what the current shipping / newest HW version is on the 628?

DIR-628 is A2 hardware and if updated to firmware 1.20NA, then you can not revert the any other firmware version below 1.20.

Also, DIR-628 router is a "single band" router.  You can only set it to use either 5.0Ghz or the 2.4Ghz radio.  Not both at the same time.
