DIR-655 dropping wired and wireless connections
« on: February 08, 2013, 02:19:46 PM »

After 5 years of services my DIR-655 begun acting up yesterday; first of it begun by getting REALLY slow, it could take up to 25 seconds to login into the software and up to 30+ seconds just going from one menu to another, on some instances connection (wired) to the router was lost. This morning it started dropping all connections, wired or not; first my iphone then my WDTV, after that itīs been pretty much random connections. On one given moment wired works but not wireless, then wireless works but not wired and sometimes I get both but for 3 or 4 minutes.

Iīve reset the router to factory settings, plugged/unplugged, changed cables, network adapters on desktops and the problem persists. Im beginning to think its a firmware problem (corrupted, hacked, virus?) but would very much like to hear your opinion

DIR-655 A2
FW: 1.35

Connection: ADSL

Thanks for your help

Link>Welcome!
What region are you located?
Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
Has a Factory Reset been performed?
Any recent changes to your network? Any additions of devices?

What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask.

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.

Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules.
WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP server feature. Tools/Time.

Link>Wireless Installation Considerations
What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?

Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
Try turning off Short GI, WLAN Partition, and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Enable WMM Enable Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic. Ensure theres are no malware residing on any PCs or Laptops.

Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.

Router is working fine at one moment and the next it dies. Im mainly having problems streaming audio/video from my Synology NAS (DS-212J) that is wired directly to the router to my WD TV Live on wireless using a DWA-131. During 5 months this setup had been working great, but lately and getting considerable lag spikes on the WD TV Live, movies freezes, audio is lost and eventually the connection to the router is dead.
At that moment the router gets REALLY HOT even though I live in an air condition house with a normal temp of 22 C.

I have disabled QoS, WISH, even SPI. Set to channel 6, mixed g and n mode, channel width: Auto, WPA Mode: Auto.

BTW... last week I upgraded to the newest FW 1.37NA, something happened with my config file that couldnt be loaded (some error about invalid data) so I started the router config from scratch but the problem persists. Its been 4 days since the router last dropped my Iphone 4 connection but still having trouble streaming movies to my WD TV LIVE

Might install a external Gb network switch. Helps eliminate any un-necessary router processing.

A Gb switch just to stream .MP4, .MKV and .AVI files? it does sound like overkill, specially when my setup was working just fine.

Might try it, they work well and easy to set up. Not that expensive either.

Unfortunately in my neck of the woods access to any component is cost prohibitive (a new DIR-655 is worth twice the minimum wage, crazy expensive). Is there any other way to troubleshoot this problem?

As of lately my WD TV Live has had more and more problems trying to connect via wireless to the router, I canīt figure out if itīs the DIR-655, or the DWA-131 adapter that is used with the WD TV Live or the WD TV Live itself.

How far away is the router from the TV?
Can you test with the TV using a Wired LAN cable to the router to see if the TV works any better? This would help in narrowing it down to wireless or TV possibly.

Try using Single mode N, WPA2/AES only, Auto 20/40Mhz...

Yeah, Iīll be trying a wired connection later on this weekend after I get off work, I just found my crimping tool and some RJ45 connectors I needed.

The WD TV Live is not far away, maybe 12 o 14 steps away from the router. I have been using dual G and N mode (G for some older devices even though all my devices are N rated), but Iīll give Only N a go and see how it goes

Ok, this is getting weird...  ??? I got home and tried several options:

1- Removed the DWA-131 USB dongle and connected it to my laptop, opened up VLC and started watching both SD and HD movies and no problem there, everything went smooth.

2- Removed the DWA-131 from the laptop, put it back in on the WD TV Live on the REAR USB port and problems begun... AGAIN, it could not stream the movie properly, I had to wait approximately a whole minute before I could even see the introduction play, not to mention that after a few seconds the stuttering begun all over again. I THEN decided to try it on the SIDE USB port... VOILA...!!! Working again. Not stuttering, no jumping, no waiting, no nothing... as good as the first day I hooked it up. Soooo... figuring that the REAR USB was toast I connected my 16 Gb Survivor thumb drive in it and again it worked smoothly... HUH  ??? ???

3- Hard wired the WD TV Live directly to the DIR-655, network setup went smoothly and begun playing back another movie... smooooth as silk, its like the DS212J was directly connected to the WD TV... I even FF and RWD the movie without a glitch so everything is working correctly.

All this leads me to conclued the rear USB connector on the WD TV has gone on a wireless strike and will refuse to play anything media related after almost 2 years working properly; oddly it will work with a USB thumb drive  WTH ???

One thing I noticed is that the DWA-131 dongle does get VERY HOT after streaming content, could it be that the heat generated somehow fried something on the inside of the WD TV, but again that would not explain why it is able to reproduce media playing from a thumbdrive.

UPDATE: Connection from the WD TV is acting up again. Put the DWA-131 on the lateral USB port and even though it could connect to the DS212J its taking for ever to stream media... 3 minutes staring at a black screen is no fun.

I guess the WD TV DOES NOT like wireless connections. Sad

I recommend going LAN wired or if you need wireless between router and TV, install a D-Link model DAP that has a bridge function, bridge the DAP to the router then run a LAN wired from the TV to the DAP.
