Ampersands, UPNP AV and Xbox360
« on: April 28, 2009, 05:20:22 PM »

Hello, I'm new to these forums, and I've looked around for this issue and didn't find any posts about it, so please forgive me if this subject has already been touched on.

Something I discovered today after some headaches and general frustration, is that when you ad an ampersand (the "&" symbol) into any directory name or file name of your upnp av folder, including the main shared folder, all the files from that folder are effectively hidden from your Xbox 360's video viewer. For example, if you add a folder named, for the sake of example we'll call it "WebTV & Podcast" to the main shared folder (the one that you point your DNS323 at to share over the network) and hit "refresh" everything in that folder disappears and simply says "No videos found." to your xbox's video viewer until your remove or rename that folder and/or file.

Again, if this has already been mentioned, sorry.

Ref:  My post about MP3 file problems over under forum for DSM-520 Media Player, that happens to be acessing MP3 and VOB files from the DNC323 AV Server.  ( http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=5134.0)

I am able to play both tracks when I put them into a test folder with the name of "test".  But when I saw your post about the Ampersands "&", which just happened to be in the folder I was having a problem with I thought I struck gold!!!  Bot no...........

I went and took the "&" out of the folder name, manually refreshed the AV Server since it appears after I updated the f/w to 1.07 the auto refresh has disappeared, BUT NO it didn't solve the lockup problem.

Will play in this path
K:\media player\audio MP3\Audio_recorded\testMP3\01wasn't_that_love.mp3

But not in either of these paths
K:\media player\audio MP3\Audio_recorded\Audio_recorded-mp#10\frizzel,west_the-david&shelly,album\01wasn't_that_love.mp3  OR
K:\media player\audio MP3\Audio_recorded\Audio_recorded-mp#10\frizzel,west_the-david-shelly,album\01wasn't_that_love.mp3

Locks the DMS-520 solid and have to power down with front panel button because the remote will do nothing.
There must be a problem with folder labeling????

p23185,

Try removing the # symbol and test again....

I noticed something on the Xbox360, not sure if  its going also to apply to your case
It looks like there is a limit or characters that you Folder+Filename can have
ie:
if "K:\media player"  is the folder you selected to share in UPnP AV
"audio MP3\Audio_recorded\testMP3\01wasn't_that_love.mp3" = 52 Chars Total

"audio MP3\Audio_recorded\Audio_recorded-mp#10\frizzel,west_the-david-shelly,album\01wasn't_that_love.mp3" = 100 Chars

In test I've done with the Xbox360 I noticed that if I when over about 70 Chars
The file would appear, but If I tried to play the 360 would give me an error and not play the file

I've experience a similar issue with Videos.... if the total length of Folder+filename is over about 70 chars
the title appears, but the xbox360 refuses to play it. Not sure if this is a 360 limitation or if its the DNS-323
