Author Topic: 655, B1 FW 2.10NA drops the whole network when win7 laptop is connected  (Read 6256 times)

Any time I connect windows 7 laptop to the router (wifi or LAN line), it only works for one or two website hits and then the network drops completely for all devices. To recover I have to reboot the router. Note when the network drops router leds show no signs of problem, it shows blue for both the internet led 'blue' and wireless led blinking blue, however no internet connection for any other device. I can login to the router fine and check my settings etc.  If I connect my win7 laptop directly to the modem no issues I stay on the internet as long as I want. I am using DHCP auto option for all my devices in DIR-655. Problem is same whether I connect  laptop via hard wire or wifi to the router and I will be able to go to one or two hits like I can go to yahoo.com it brings it up (latest one not the cache) and then if click on any other link on that site
network drops for all the devices (i.e tablets, ipods etc.) and I have to reboot the router.

My router is DIR-655, B1, FW 2.10NA

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?
  • Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
  • Has a Factory Reset been performed?
  • Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates?
  • Was the router working before any firmware updates?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values
  • For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.

Router and Wired Configurations
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.
  • Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options, Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
  • Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual or under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP.
  • Enable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) under Setup/Internet/Manual.
  • Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking. Link>Finding Faster DNS Addresses using Name Bench
  • Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
  • Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
  • If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only or Disable IPv6 options under Setup/IPv6.
  • Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
  • Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules. Enable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming for routers that have a Media Server option.
  • Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
  • WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
  • Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP Server feature. Tools/Time.
  • Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.

Wireless Configurations
Links>Wireless Installation Considerations and Managing Signal Congestion
  • Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Can be anything and not something thats already in use by any neighboring WiFi routers. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
  • What wireless modes are you using?
  • 2.4Ghz Routers only: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
  • Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
  • Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
  • What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto TPIK and AES.
  • What wireless devices do you have connected?
  • Any cordless house phones?
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?
  • If you have any of these options, Try turning OFF or ON Short GI, WLAN Partition, HT 20/40 Co-exhistance and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Recommended settings are default. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
  • Enable WMM Enable Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

3rd Party Security Software Configurations
  • Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
  • Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Following are the answers to the questions asked in the post.
HW version is B1
Firmware version is 2.10  latest
I am located in central Texas, Austin TX
I have tried both wired and wireless connections  same symptoms, can connect to a website once or twice via my win7 laptop and then whole network drops and require modem reboot.  If i don't connect my win7 laptop, then network runs fine without any problem for other devices. This win7 laptop connects fine to my cable modem (hard wired) directly.

I have not performed factory reset on the router.

I am using Suddenlink service and my cable modem is  ARRIS WBM760.

I have MTU setting of 1500

I have tried all of the settings that are advised in the post without any improvement.

I would have your ISP check the signal and make sure it's to spec going into the ISP modem.
Ensure no TV line splitters are present on the line as they can reduce signal and cause noise going into the ISP modem.

I see your ISP modem has been discontinued and is a few years old. You might ask your ISP for an updated modem if possible. We've seen some issues with Arris modems: Arris Cable Modems and External Routers

For your laptop, if other devices are working and the laptop only seems to cause this problem, I would check out the laptop for extra running applications. Make sure the NIC and WiFi adapter drivers are up to date. Run the laptop in Safe Mode with Networking as a test to see if anything happens there. The laptop seems to be a point of interest and investigation for you.

I have the same issue ... I hook my Win 7 laptop into the network and DNS stops responding within 2 minutes.  Usually DNS starts responding again within 5 - 10 minutes, although occasionally I have to reboot the router.  Looking through the forums, it looks like a fair number of people are having this same issue with no resolution.  It isn't a 2.10 issue ... I have 2.07, the guest WiFi recycles every 10 seconds on 2.10 so I set it back.

If I set the DNS server manually to Google before attaching the laptop, things work fine.  But if the laptop uses the router DNS the above happens.  So the DNS capabilities of the router are involved somehow.

And lest they get posted again, I already followed the stuff FurryNutz posts of things to check.

What it turned out to be was the laptop making too many DNS requests and the speed of my ISP's server being too slow to respond in a timely manner.  DNS requests just started piling up, and the router started responding again when it finally worked through all the requests.  I set the router to use Google for its DNS, and while I still occasionally get DNS timeouts, it's just 2-4 seconds and things don't lock up.

Seems like this would be a common occurrence, and the router should handle it more gracefully.  At least make it easier to diagnose that's what's going on...

You could try this and see if it helps better as well and maybe then the DNS responce will be better if DNS Relay is disabled:
