Very poor 5GHz range
« on: April 29, 2013, 10:13:07 AM »

Hi, I don't know if this is something that is possible to get help with, but I have problems using the 5GHz band as the wireless signal range is so poor. I'm trying to connect to it with a Kindle Fire HD. I can only use it when I'm within about 5ft of the router before I go out of range. It works fine on the 2.4 GHz band with good range.

I was really just wondering if this is something anyone else has had an issue with or if there's anything I can do to improve signal.

Thanks

UPDATE:  I've also just tried to use the 5ghz band with an iphone 5 with the same issues, so it looks like the problem is with the router rather than the devices

ink>Welcome!

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
What region are you located?

Has a Factory Reset been performed?

5ghz is affected by building materials such and walls and doors and is only best in line of sight. However for my 826L, 2 rooms way at about 15-20 ft, wooden walls, I get good signal in my living room on my Mac Book Pro.

Be advised that FW v1.03 and v1.04 have 5Ghz problems and are not recommended. I'm currently using v1.02 and works well.

Hmm, what "problems"?  For the problem to be limited to the 5Ghz band would imply settings specific to that radio.  Are you implying that there may be "internal" settings not user accessible that D-Link has not optimized?

The 5 Ghz band has been my savior because of the overly crowded 2.4 Ghz I live with.  I just upgraded to fw 1.04, what problems should I look for?

The 5Ghz radio was not correctly connecting at client supported speed rates between the router and client side HW.

Was the router working before any firmware updates? What was the reason for updating? Was there problem seen before updating?

Sorry for slow update on this, have been away. I'm still having no luck using the 5ghz range, and now am having other issues as well which I've posted in another post. I have been using firmware v 1.02 but have just upgraded to v 1.04, same result of not being able to use 5ghz range from more than a foot away >:(

So if you move the router across the room, your device (receiver) will not show it in the list of available networks, making it appear the radio is dead?

I had a problem where I thought my 5G radio died because suddenly while streaming, the radio just disappeared from the list.  I powered up/down several times.  Upgraded firmware, no joy.  Then gave up.  If it aint workin, it aint workin!  I never thought to move the router next to the device.  I guess because if I could, I'd just wire the device to the router and forget wireless.  I soon hope to go wired when we add a room.

Anyway, I sent mine back and received a replacement.    I was not willing to troubleshoot anymore.  But I will say my 2.4 radio had a great signal while I waited for the replacement to arrive.  Just to much interference to be much use for streaming.  Then FN suggested some alternative settings.  Did not get a chance to try them out 'cause the new router arrived and had a time limit to return the burn out and I really wanted the 5 G radio to use.

Wouldn't D-Link or your retailer provide an RMA?

Yeah thats exactly it, when I'm right next to the router with the device I get some 5GHz signal but as soon as I move to the other side of the room it just disappears completely and I cant see it on the network list on my device.

I'm starting to wonder whether I may have got a bit of a duff model, what with the other problems I'm having as well, maybe I should just try for a replacement, its only about 6 months old so should be ok.

What region are you located?

Do all 5Ghz devices exhibit this issue on 5Ghz?
What channel is currently set on the 5Ghz radio?

IMHO, I think there may be an engineering or quality control problem with the DIR-826L 5 Ghz radio.

Maybe FN knows what the first D-Link model was with a 5 GHz radio and when it was first available?  My impression is that this is a relatively new product, so maybe there is a specification not quite engineered right or some part not quite up to specification.  I'd be curious if D-Link would know of, or even admit to,  the failure rate of the DIR-826L.  I'm sure most work OK, but obviously there are some that don't, yours and mine in particular.  At this point I'd return and replace yours since I already did mine, twice.

Or, just live with the 2.4 GHz radio until such time you need to replace for whatever reason.  Is there a particular reason you wanted 5?

No there wasn't a specific reason that I wanted to use it, its just that we have a couple of devices in the house that can use the 5GHz band so thought it would be worth trying it. Nevermind, I will try to get a replacement. At least I'm not alone in having these probs!

FN - I only have 2 devices that can use 5GHz but they both have the same issues. Its on ch 36
