OK, here goes.  I've read through almost every post and have tried the following to get my 750gb desktop  drive to copy to my DNS-321, but it always loses its connection or gives me an error halfway through.  I know 700gb is a lot of data to transfer, but I don't know how else to populate this drive and keep it raid1 without it formatting one or both of my 750gb drives.  I'm using it with my Dlink dir-655 gigabit router

I have:

Turned off upnp, itunes, NFS, FTP and all other servers
Turned off 'enable hibernation' on hard drives
Reformatted hard drive
Restarted after resetting all settings to factory default
Restarted router and tried again.

updated firmware twice on dns-321 and dir-655 ( now on beta 1.03 firmware and beta firmware for the router also)

used the following backup and/or clone drive programs:
Ghost 12
Second Copy
Backup Exec
Syncback Pro
MS SyncToy 2.0

All give 'cannot complete copy' type errors.  I make sure I am not using any of the files and that the computer is not being used.  I have run scandisk on the source drive, which copies just fine to an eSATA drive directly attached to the source desktop computer.

Any help would be greatly appreciated before I give up.

You haven't provided much detail about your network infrastructure - that vital link between the computer and the NAS - it would also be nice to get the exact text of one of those 'cannot complete copy' type errors - I'm willing to bet they include text that points to the problem.

Assuming that you are using a static ip address on the NAS, try configuring a static ip on the computer and connect them directly to one another using the cable that shipped with the NAS.

RAID1 is for disk redundancy - NOT data backup - don't confuse the two.

Also, to add some additional questions to fordem's -

-Has the problem just started or always been this way?
-Did you just get the DLink 321 or is it old?
-Does it work fine for smaller transfers?
-Do you have another share on your network that you can try this transfer for testing?
